I have always been a fan of the Spurs and I remember a bunch of losing seasons. But, ever since a man by the name of David Robinson arrived, he (along with many other players, coaches, and owners) turned the franchise into a winner. Thanks!!! Now, the Spurs got 4 Championships (I never could’ve imagined that would ever happen, but it did…4 times)!!
The Spurs are just a consistent franchise with a very stable ownership group, a coaching staff that has been basically the same since 1999, and a core group of players that again has basically been the same since 1999. WOW!!!
One of the best thing that ever happened to me in my life was when I worked for Spurs from 1999-2002. Even though I arrived after the 1999 Championship season, I did get to take the trophy home a few times (we were showing it off at the SA Stock Show and Rodeo cause we partnering with them to build the arena). That was awesome!! I also gained a lot of 1999 Championship memorabilia; which again was awesome!!! One of them is an autographed picture of Avery Johnson hitting the game winning shot in Game 5 in New York…awesome!!!
OK, so I did expect the Spurs to win but not in such dramatic and nail biting fashion. One blowout win, 2 OT wins, and then to win a close closeout game on the road in Memphis…WOW!!!
Man, Game 1 was pure Tony Parker. I knew he would bounce back from his poor performance in Game 6 VS Golden State.
In Game 2, Timmy looked the 2 time MVP in OT. I don’t even want to start thinking of what would’ve happened had we lost that game!
Game 3, I was doing my stat thing at Heroes stadium but we were constantly getting updates and when we were leaving the game, OT had just started. Well, when I got in my car and turned on 1200 WOAI, the game was over and the Spurs kicked the Grizzlies in OT. To be down 18 points and win by 11…unbelievable!! One win away…
The final quarter in Game 4 was unbelievable (I was on my feet and biting my nails) and had Memphis played like that the 3 previous games, it could’ve been a much different series. The Grizzlies fought extremely hard, but they don’t have a Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, or Tim Duncan who know what it takes to win a closeout game on the road. They wanted absolutely no part in bringing the Grizzlies home as luggage for a Game 5!!! Tony was absolutely spectacular. WOW!!
So, we got the sweep with no injuries and now the Spurs have 9 days off before the start of the NBA Finals!! WOW!!!
I do gotta give a bunch of kudos to the Memphis Grizzlies. They did beat the LA Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder…two of the teams that could’ve challenged the Spurs. Thank you Memphis!!
The last time the Spurs swept a Conference Finals was in 1999 against the Portland Trail Blazers. One of those games featured the historic Memorial Day Miracle by Sean Elliott (I can still hear Bob Costas calling that play…wow)!!! That Portland team was really deep…JR Rider, former Spur Damon Stoudamire, Rasheed Wallace, Arvydas Sabonis, Brian Grant, Walt Williams, Stacey Augmon, Jim Jackson, Greg Anthony, Bonzi Wells, former Indiana Pacer Jermaine O’Neal, and current Indiana Pacer assistant coach Brian Shaw!!
Do I want to see the Indiana Pacers or the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals?
Easy question…definitely the Indiana Pacers, cause I think we will have a better chance of beating them than Miami. Plus, it would be a match-up of 2 former ABA and small market teams…just what the NBA doesn’t want!! In addition to Spur killer, David West, the Pacers have some good players around him like Paul George, Roy Hibbert, and former Spurs George Hill and Ian Mahinmi. Unfortunately, there superstar, Danny Granger is hurt and won’t be playing.
If it is Miami, the NBA would love it and the ratings would be sky high. It would also be one heck of a match-up and a battle till the bitter end. The Heat are built around 3 players who all make $17 million and they are Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and Lebron James. They are fairly OK players (LOL)!!! The Spurs played Lebron and his Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2007 NBA Finals and we swept em!!! The Heat also got Jesus Shuttlesworth, aka Ray Allen!
THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS WILL BE MAKING APPEARANCE NUMBER 5 IN THE NBA FINALS, WINNING IN 1999, 2003, 2005, AND 2007!!!!!!!! GO SPURS GO!!!
All I ask of the “basketball gods” is for the SPURS TO WIN THE NBA FINALS!!!!!!
