Matt Wixon (@mattwixon) is a sports writer and columnist for the Dallas Morning News, so he knows about High School football in the state of Texas!! I was not only interested in the Judson-Midland game, but I wanted to read about the other games he chose.
Even though I don’t have a Kindle, I do have a Kindle app on my GS3 and in less than 30 seconds it was purchased and available on my GS3…wow!!! Technology is so cool!!!
It was an easy and quick read and dude, if you are fan of Texas High School football like me, this is a must read!! It provides details (both leading up to and after each particular game) with interviews from the key players and coaches.
I got goosebumps when I read about the Judson-Midland game cause I remember that last play like it happened yesterday. After reading about all the other games, I felt as if I was in the press-box watching these historic games with Matt.
Man, last season, two games that I worked will definitely make my list of best games…
On, September 29th, Monterrey Tech, took a road trip to DW Rutledge stadium to play the Wagner Thunderbirds. If you have never heard of Monterrey Tech, you are not alone as I had no clue either!!! I had to do some extensive research…well, they are a team from Mexico and they have already played 4 other Texas high school football teams, winning one of them.
Despite not having a Wagner starting line-up, I knew who the main dudes on offense were so I was able to put them on my stat board very easily. Totally different story for Monterrey Tech as I only had a roster. I basically added the Tech players as they touched the ball. As the game rolled on, I started to get more familiar with the Monterrey players.
Monterrey Tech bought with them the Mexican Flag and after the Mexican national anthem was played, both head coaches shook hands at midfield; very classy.
The Wagner Thunderbirds had 160 more yards of total offense and 9 more first downs than Monterrey Tech. By just those numbers alone, one would think Wagner crushed em, but that didn’t happen!!
Robbie Gardner, the Wagner running back, had 18 carries for 90 yards and 1 touchdown. The quarterback, Tekoa Bryant-McKinnies, had 206 yards passing and 1 touchdown. Khalil Bragg-Morris, a wide receiver, had 5 receptions for 136 yards and 1 touchdown.
Monterrey Tech’s starting quarterback, Melchor Emanuel Fuente, got hurt on there first possession. Man, that sucks!!!
Alfredo Mauricio Mogas, the back-up quarterback, looked kinda shell shocked for the first 3 quarters; but in the 4th, he was very impressive. Mogas was 15 for 28 passing for 151 yards and 3 touchdowns (all 3 were in the 4th).
Seven receivers caught a pass. The most impressive and incredible catch that gave Monterrey Tech the lead was by Eduardo Califa who caught a pass with 1 hand and never blinked or turned around; he was running at full speed…TOUCHDOWN!!! Wow!!!! I hope someone got it on tape cause it was an ESPN Top 10 reception.
Unbelievable catch by Califa and comeback in the 4th quarter for Monterrey Tech!!! They scored 27 points and Wagner scored nothing!! That comeback for Monterrey Tech started when a Wagner punt went for negative yards and Tech returned it to the 10 yard line!!!
I along with a lot of fans and media were really expecting Wagner to cruise to an easy win. When you team is down 24-0 going into the 4th quarter like Monterrey Tech was last night, it is so easy to just quit playing, but Monterrey Tech never threw in the flag; they kept fighting and ended up scoring 27 points in that final quarter to give them a huge upset victory over the Wagner Thunderbirds. Wow!!!
I was really happy for the Monterrey Tech players, coaches, and fans when they scored there first touchdown of the game. Going home with at least 6 points is much better than a big fat zero!!! After that first Tech touchdown; everything went downhill fast for Wagner.
Final score was Monterrey Tech 27 and Wagner 24.
On Saturday, December 8th, the O’Connor Panthers played the Madison Mavericks at the Alamodome with the winner going to the state semifinals!
I kinda had a feeling this game was gonna be close, but I never expected an offensive explosion with a bunch of big plays by both teams. Of all the games I have worked this season, this particular one was by far the most exciting!!! Just take a look at the numbers below:
5 players over 100 yards of offense14 Touchdowns
45 First Downs
101 Points
122 Plays
1027 Yards
I was really happy that the O’Connor Panthers finally after 10 tries defeated the Madison Mavericks by a score of 52 to 49!!! Wow!! After the game concluded, I needed some Oxygen!!!
Marquis Warford, the Madison running back, had 22 carries for 257 yards and 5 touchdowns. Yes, 5 touchdowns!!! It has been a joy to watch him play High School football the past few seasons and I really hope he shines at Memphis next year.
Tyler Mangold, the Madison quarterback, was 16 for 25 passing for 223 yards with 1 interception and 2 touchdowns. Byron Daniels, the Madison wide receiver, had 6 receptions for 75 yards and the 2 touchdowns. Daniels and Mangold will be returning next season.
Zach Galindo, the O’Connor quarterback, was 11 for 18 passing for 235 yards with 5 touchdowns. Nate Phillips, the wide receiver, 4 receptions for 107 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end, Clay Lansdale, had 2 receptions for 40 yards and both were touchdowns.
The O’Connor Panthers running back, Tre Johnson, had 24 carries for 154 yards and 1 touchdown. I worked seven O’Connor games last season and Tre’s rushing numbers for those games were unbelievable:
Week 2…30 carries for 323 yards and 4 touchdowns
Week 4…26 carries for 142 yards and 1 touchdown
Week 5…15 carries for 164 yards
Week 9…13 carries for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns
Week 11…19 carries for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns
Week 14…24 carries for 154 yards and 1 touchdown
Week 15…15 carries for 52 yards
If we total it all up, Tre had 142 carries for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns. Yeah, he is that good and whatever school scoops him up will be very glad!!!
39 days till WEEK 0…I CAN’T WAIT!!!
