I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these teams made it to Arlington, TX on December 21st to play for a state championship!! The Judson Rockets, Steele Knights, O’Connor Panthers, and the Brennan Bears are the other teams that have a very strong chance of also playing on December 21st!! Yes, the season is only in Week 3 and I am already talking about Week 16!!!
Smithson Valley is coached by Larry Hill and Madison is coached by Jim Streety. Both Hill and Streety are two of the best High School football coaches and in the state of Texas.
My wife and I have been sharing a car since Week 0 and every weekday morning we drive by Madison High School and guess who is practicing at 7:00am? It isn’t the football team, the cheerleaders, or the color guard. It is THE BAND…AND SOMEONE IS ALWAYS RUNNING LAPS, which I think is funny!!!
I guess it is good that the band can’t hear me playing my musical instrument (my mouth) in my car as we drive by (cause my passenger side power window doesn’t work…stupid car)…cause I am way out of tune with whatever I am singing along with and don’t know the words to every single song in my playlist!
I don’t know about you, but I am always amazed at the band performances before and during the game and at halftime. Last year, I heard a band play Gagnam Style…I am totally serious!! And, dude, as soon as I hear the beat of the drums, my hips start to shake (but not as good as Shakira). My shaking only lasts for a minutes as I got to numbers to crunch and can’t be dancing in the press-box.
You know something, ever since I saw the 2013 TNL schedule, I knew this was going to be a great and intriguing match-up of two extremely evenly matched teams. I was expecting a battle with a low scoring close game.
I totally didn’t expect to see a final score of 47 to 20 and one team to have 574 yards of total offense and the other team to have 186 yards of offense. Dude, at the end of the first quarter, it was already 21 to 0 and halftime it was over as the score was 34 to 13. So, now that I gave you lots of numbers (hey, I am stat man), I will tell you that that the SMITHSON VALLEY RANGERS DEFEATED THE MADISON MAVERICKS BY A FINAL SCORE OF 47 TO 20!! I was shocked and surprised and just wowed by the Rangers overall performance.
This was the first Madison game I have ever worked where they didn’t look like the Mavericks of normal? The quarterback, Cody Ennis, was the only player with over 100 yards. The starting running back, Dominque Daniels, was hurt and his replacements didn’t look impressive at all. I am used to seeing a STUD running back for Madison such as Jacob Gutierrez, all the Greens, Devin Thomas (yes, I was at the game when he got horse collared and that injury ended his brilliant high school football career), Galen McAllister, and Marquis Warford.
Gosh, the defense had no answer for the Smithson Valley Rangers.
The Mavericks better wake up fast and not think about this loss cause they start district play next week against the Churchill Chargers.
The Rangers ran 68 plays for 574 yards and 4 players had over 100 yards. The quarterback, Garrett Smith, was 10 for 16 passing for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns and also had 17 carries for 125 yards and 1 touchdown. He has committed to play for Louisiana-Monroe!!! The running back, Cameron Jones, had 14 carries for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kyle Kershner, a wide receiver, had 3 receptions for 103 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Rangers are a model for perfection and it starts with the head coach, Larry Hill. You never see them make stupid mistakes and if you make a stupid mistake, the Rangers make you pay.
Man, I can’t wait till October 18th cause that is when the Judson Rockets will play the Rangers in Spring Branch.
Tonight, I will be at Farris stadium for the Brandeis Broncos and O’Connor Panthers.
