I also want to thank Dickeys BBQ on FM 78 for supplying us food at all the Judson home games. Yummy!!!
OK, I have no more thanks left in my repertoire, so now I can finally talk about the Judson Rocket Football. YAY!!!
On Friday night, I was D W Rutledge stadium for a District 25-5A game between the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars and the Judson Rockets. Both teams had identical records of (6-2, 2-1) coming into the game.
Last year when these teams met on the “RED TURF” at Cougar stadium, they combined for 76 points (Judson won 42 to 34), 923 yards, 125 plays, and 5 players had over 100 yards of offense. The quarterback for Canyon, Phillip Shelton, had 22 carries for 167 yards and 1 touchdown and he also had 213 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Shelton was a Junior last year and all day at work on Friday, I was thinking of Shelton and how impressed I was with him and I couldn’t wait to see him play on Friday. Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey, the Judson quarterback, was 8 of 15 passing for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns.
I was expecting a similar outcome on Friday night stat wise and ultimately ending up with another Judson victory.
So, when the game ended, the teams combined for 671 yards on 115 plays. Not quite the offensive explosion as last year, but pretty darn close!! The scoreboard, however, reflected a blow-out in favor of the Judson Rockets by a final score of 38 to 10. Yeah, I was kinda surprised by the score.
New Braunfels Canyon quarterback, Phillip Shelton, was 9 of 19 passing for 109 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He also had 11 carries for 32 yards. The Rockets defense shut him down. WOW!!! Running back, Gibreel Evans, had 21 carries for 73 yards (he needs just 11 more yards next week to go over 1,000 yards).
The Judson Rockets ran 47 plays for 404 yards. Quarterback, Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey, was 14 of 21 passing for 261 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. I think Rayjohn will easily be my Week 9 stat/player of the week. Wide receiver, Michael Akai, had 2 receptions for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns (yep, awesome fantasy numbers). Cameron Johnson, another wide receiver, had 2 receptions for 31 yards and 1 touchdown (his first touchdown of the season and I am glad he healthy now after being injured in Week 0). Running back, Jo’Von Kyle, had a 44 yard touchdown reception.
Combined, the Rockets running backs, had 25 carries for 143 yards and 1 touchdown. That lone touchdown was by Malik Pryor. I really think it is strange that we are done with Week 9 and the Rockets are probably not going to have a 1,000 yard rusher this season. But, I guess when you have such a prolific passing game, you don’t need a dominate running back.
Man, talk about the Judson passing game, did you know that Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey now has the school record of 2,083 yards passing (breaking Guy Anderson‘s mark of 2,069 in 1995)? WOW!!! Rayjohn needs to be in the mix for the best quarterback in San Antonio this year.
After a tough loss to Smithson Valley in Week 7, the Rockets have played absolutely phenomenal and as I have mentioned before, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made it to a state championship game.
During halftime, the 1983 and the 1993 Judson state championship teams were recognized. When I saw that, I thought to myself that I am so damn lucky that every Friday night I get to watch a state powerhouse play football!!! And several former Judson players are now playing college ball and a few have made it big time to the NFL. What other High School can say that?
Tomorrow, I am going to Alamo stadium and the Convocation Center gymnasium for more photos of the renovation which I share on Tuesday. The gym should be nearing completion.
Also tomorrow, I will have my article on the St. Anthony football game from Saturday evening.
Next Thursday (which is also the last TNL game), I will be at Heroes stadium for the Churchill Chargers and the Lee Volunteers.
On Friday, I will be at Unicorn stadium in New Braunfels as the Judson Rockets play the New Braunfels Unicorns.
