So, here is the list:
7,249 – Jerrell Wilkerson, Clark (2001-04)
7,099 – Marcus Wright, Reagan (2005-07)
7,036 – Joseph Sadler, Devine (2008-11)
6,592 – Malcolm Brown, Steele (2007-10)
6,309 – Justin Stockton, Steele (2010-13)
6,188 – Jerod Douglas, Judson (1991-93)
4,794 – Chris Johnson, East Central (2006-09)
4,887 – Quaylon Jones, Judson (2008-11)
4,875 – Aaron Green, Madison (2008-10)
4,692 – Chancy Campbell, Judson (2001-03) I have had the pleasure to see each of them with the lone exception of Jerod Douglas from Judson.
I even saw Jerrell and Justin make their debut!!! How far down on the list are these players:
Trinton Ynclan, Brandeis
Jock Tilghman, Clark
Kyle Fox, Judson
Travis Lewis, Lee
Matt Esquivel, MacArthur
Devin Thomas, Madison (he had 483 yards in one game and that is a San Antonio record)
Marquis Warford, Madison
Jacob Gutierrez, Madison
Gary green, Madison
Saleem Fernandez, Marshall
Tre Johnson, O’Connor
Brandon Armstrong, Roosevelt
Lawrence Mattison, Smithson Valley
Ra’shawn Mosely, Southwest
David Glasco, Wagner
You realize that Madison and Judson seem to dominate the list with running backs? That is actually nothing new!!
Each of these running backs has the same thing in common…SPEED and we all know that SPEED KILLS. I mean, once they get a half of a step (some need even less space) in front of the defensive player, they are off to the races and the end-zone is the destination.
Man, I wish I could experience SPEED on the turf just once and feel the adrenaline and excitement. Even if you put a piece of food on a string to lure me to run on the turf, I would very likely give up after 5 yards and just order CHINESE take-out from my smart-phone!!
So, who is my favorite? I can’t pick a favorite because each was so good.
And, yes, I know I am leaving out a lot more names because my football memory can’t recall every single running back I have seen since 1997!! Sorry folks.
Heck, I can’t even remember what I had for lunch today…just kidding; Chase actually fed us for FREE today with turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and apple pie and it was yummy; but why was I so sleepy afterwards?
But, I will say that whenever Devin Thomas and Marcus Wright faced each other, it was basically anything you can do, I can do better!! Yes, I was at the last face-off between Thomas and Wright and even though Thomas’s team won, Devin suffered a season ending injury very late in the 4th quarter (which was absolutely devastating).
Guess what? The Week 14 stat/player of the week was a RUNNING BACK from Madison…gee, what a coincidence!!
Tomorrow, I will be at St. Anthony for a High School basketball game between St. Anthony and St. Mary’s Hall. In case you aren’t aware, I am the “unofficial beat writer” for the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets basketball games!! The head coach is Kevin Smisek and his son, Nico, is the starting running back at Churchill.
And, on Friday, I am going to Alamo stadium for new pictures of the amazing renovation. Warren McVea and Linus Bear are probably the top 2 running backs in the San Antonio and both shared a memorable game at Alamo stadium on November 29, 1963 (the game was televised live on WOAI and it was also the first high school game broadcasted statewide).
Unfortunately, I have no more High School football games scheduled this year as Brennan (there running backs, Da’Shawn Key, Makai Green, and Nathaniel Wells JR have a combined 3,388 yards rushing and 61 touchdowns…WOW) and Falls City (there running back Justin Twine has 1,541 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns…WOW again) play out of town for the state semi-finals (Thursday and Friday and I have no more time off from work) and if they do make it to the state championship, they will again play Thursday and Friday in Arlington.
I will watch the Brennan game on TV at my parent’s house (wife and I ditched cable in October; I will write about that in a few weeks).
I will be working the San Antonio High All Star football game at the Alamodome on January 4th and it will be televised on CW35 and prior to that game is the US Army All American Bowl which I am planning to watch as a fan!
There will be end of the year High School football BLOG but I am not sure if it will be published after the state championships or after January 4th? I am definitely going to write a BLOG about the UIL re-alignments in February.
I wrote an earlier BLOG this season about Texas High School Football quarterbacks.
Well, that is all I got…I am gonna run around my house and do my CHINESE FOOD dance (we got Chinese food for dinner tonight).
- Mark Kusenberger (Koos)December 11, 2013 at 9:15 PMAmazing, Devin Thomas only played 15 games at running back in high school. He played defensive back his sophomore year (Tony Green’s senior year), played 9 games his junior year (missed 1 game + Madison missed the playoffs) and got hurt the sixth game of his senior year.
ReplyDelete - Mark LiebermanDecember 13, 2013 at 8:17 PMand devin will be one of the best ever in san antonio.
ReplyDelete - AnonymousFebruary 5, 2014 at 5:55 PMJerod did his damage in only two years. Also he sat out most of the second half in many games. he would slice up defenses for 300 yards then us scrubs err reserve players could get our uniforms dirty
