As soon as I left my house, I was so excited that I got goosebumps; I really got a great gig and I get paid for it…WOW!!! So lucky!!!
This was my first time at Burger stadium and my GPS guided me perfectly. I was glad that the exit was before downtown and the university on IH-35. On the trip up to Burger stadium, I saw several O’Connor fans on the highway and also at Buc-ee’s (I stopped for gas, pee, and taffy for work). As I left the stadium, I didn’t see any police officers directing traffic and it took me about 20 minutes to get back to the highway which is less than a half a mile from the stadium!
The stadium is really old fashioned…no elevator (we had to make several trips up and down the bleachers with the heavy radio equipment; that was a really good workout, but only one trip when we left since we had help from Bobby Stautzenberger’s dad and son) and no place for our crowd mic (the press-box officials helped me secure the cable which I had to run across the entire press-box, down a flight of stairs, and into the film deck). They did have water for us and a bathroom which is always very nice! I guess I get spoiled with the new stadiums and amenities they provide us.
I was really curious as to why the coaches chose this particular stadium. I wonder if the coaches chose Burger stadium after noshing down a burger!!!
I have worked 6 O’Connor games this season and I know they have an explosive and well balanced offense and a solid defense. As for Lamar, I knew from looking at there stats, they are undefeated, have a balanced offense, and the majority of the offensive leaders are underclassmen. I had no clue of how good or bad the defense for the Lamar Redskins was.
I expected a really close game and I was really hoping O’Connor would come out on top as the winners.
Zelt Minor, a defensive back for the Lamar Redskins, single handily stifled and stopped the O’Connor offense yesterday afternoon. O’Connor ran a reverse and Zelt tackled two players for a twenty yard loss!! With less than 2 minutes remaining in the game and Lamar clinging to an 8 point lead, they had a critical 4th and 1 play coming up. I saw Zelt come into the game as a blocking full back and I said out loud (Tony and Bobby didn’t hear me cause they had headsets on, but I am sure Tony’s son Shawn heard me), “give Zelt the ball.” The “football gods” answered me as Zelt caught a 6 yard pass…enough for a first down and Lamar was able to run the clock and win the game by a score of 15-7!!! Zelt was absolutely amazing!!!
Darrell Colbert, the Lamar quarterback, had 14 carries for 48 yards. Ronnie Wesley, the running back, had 22 carries for 100 yards and 1 touchdown. Levi Whiteing, another running back, had 8 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown. I was really impressed with Colbert, Wesley, Whiteing, and of course Zelt.
Man, last week O’Connor exploded for 52 points and 485 yards!! Yesterday, they had 157 yards and 7 points! Zach Galindo, the quarterback, was 6 for 33 passing for 72 yards with 2 interceptions and 1 touchdown. Yes, 6 for 33 which is a pathetic 18 percent!!! Tre Johnson, the running back, had 15 carries for 52 yards. Both got belted by a dude named ZELT!!!
I have had the pleasure to watch Tre for the past few seasons and I wish him luck next season at UTSA.
I am telling you know, O’Connor will make another long playoff run next season.
The Lamar Redskins will play the Allen Eagles next Saturday at Cowboy’s stadium in Arlington for the state championship.
Our other team from San Antonio, the Steele Knights, lost to the Katy Tigers yesterday afternoon. Katy plays the Cedar Hill Panthers next Saturday at Cowboy’s stadium in Arlington for the state championship.
We have no teams playing next week in Arlington and that also means the end of the 2012 High School football season for me. Yeah, I am sad that we have no games next week, but my wife is very happy as I get to go to her work holiday party next weekend! About two hours after I came last night, my wife came running up to me and gave me a big hug cause she realized no more football for me!!! I will definitely have some withdrawal issues when I unpack my football backpack and put all of my supplies away.
