Since, today is Sunday and I want to spend some time with my wife, I am going to keep this BLOG short and simple!!!
Reagan ran 66 plays for 406 yards AND O’Connor ran 54 plays for 261 yards. Just by that alone, one would think Reagan won the game…well, you are wrong!!! Reagan had 40 yards in penalties and 3 turnovers!!! The final score of the game was O’Connor 28 and Reagan 23.
The Reagan Rattlers played two quarterbacks and both are Sophomores. Kellen Mond was 8 of 12 for 118 yards with 1 touchdown…he also had 92 yards rushing. Cade Bormet was 10 of 15 for 114 yards (most of those yards came on the last scoring drive) with 3 interceptions and 1 touchdowns. I came away impressed with both of them. Luke Mitchum, a very tall wide reciever, caught 4 passes for 89 yards and Leyton Leone hauled in 10 passes for 90 yards (most of those yards came from Bormet on the last scoring drive) and 1 touchdown.
The O’Connor Panthers lost a lot of HUGE weapons from last years team…Nate Phillips, Billy Craft, Zach Galindo, and Alonzo Roscoe. I have had the pleasure of seeing them play for several years. Despite that, they do return the back-up quarterback, the back-up running back, and several wide receivers.
The Panthers running back, Jamontae Edwards, had 30 carries for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns. Last year, he rushed for 691 yards and scored 9 touchdowns. Yeah, I am pretty confident that when the season comes to an end, he will be one of the top running backs in the city and will have over 1,000 yards rushing. The quarterback, Johnathan McEntire, was 10 of 19 passing for 72 yards and 1 touchdowns. Jekovan Holmes, one of the wide receivers, had 3 receptions for 16 yards and 1 touchdown.
Now, I want you to grab a handkerchief because this next story will make you cry. Josh Biggles was an O’Connor Panther football player and a damn good one (yeah, I saw him play last season).
Well, in June of this year, Josh drowned while he was swimming in Paradise Canyon Recreation Park. Only 15 years old folks. At the game last night, his MOM wore his jersey, did the coin toss, and was embraced by everybody on the Panther side-line as well as the fans. It was a very touching moment for all involved and I kinda have a feeling that this horrible event can and will motivate the Panthers all season long.
Next Thursday, I will be at Farris stadium again as the Smithson Valley Rangers play the Brennan Bears.
And, on Friday, I will be DW Rutledge stadium as the Judson Rockets host the Brandeis Broncos.
