When I saw this game on the TNL TV schedule, I was excited and couldn’t wait to see it first-hand because both teams are power-houses (1 old and 1 new)!!!
The Rangers since 1997 have 191 wins and 36 loss’s and have played in 3 state championship games (2001, 2002, and 2004).
Brennan’s first year of football was 2010 and they went winless. In 2011, they had 7 wins and 4 loss’s (De’Shawn Key, a freshman, was the quarterback). In 2012, there only loss came in the state quarterfinal playoff game (Key had 2,380 total yards with 27 touchdowns). In 2013, there only loss came in the state championship game (Key had 3,869 total yards with 55 touchdowns).
I was totally expecting a close game and was even preaching that to my co-workers and anyone else who would listen to me.
If you told me the final score was going to be 41 to 10, I would’ve said “NO WAY, YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS!” Yeah, I was very surprised by how easily the winning team performed.
The Smithson Valley Rangers ran 48 plays for 285 yards. Josh Adkins, a sophomore quarterback, was 8 of 16 passing for 136 yards with 1 interception, He also had 12 carries for 77 yards with the lone Ranger (not the TV show) touchdown. Cord Given, the running back with by far the coolest name, had 11 carries for 44 yards. The leading receiver was Derek Housler with 2 receptions and 87 yards. I was really impressed with Adkins, but they need another play-maker to step up and help him out.
On an earlier BLOG I wrote about the Judson Rocket schedule, I mentioned that when the Rangers play Judson in the last game it could be for a District championship…well, I don’t think that will be the case anymore.
Da’shawn Key, the Brennan Bears SENIOR quarterback, had 299 total yards of offense (man, he had more yards then the entire Ranger football team) and 5 touchdowns. Key is an exciting player to watch due to the fact that he can burn you thru the air or with his feet. Makai Green, had 2 receptions for 79 yards and 1 touchdown that was for 71 yards. As a sophomore, Green had 709 yards on the ground with 11 touchdowns. Last year, he had 870 yards rushing with again 11 touchdowns. Pretty impressive stats especially when you have Key!!! Elijah Davis, a sophomore running back, had 11 carries for 45 yards. Jahmyl Jeter, a freshman running back, had 7 carries for 42 yards. The back-up junior quarterback, Taveon Tolefree, had only one carry but was it a 17 yard touchdown run.
The Bears have speed and experience on both sides of the ball and Davis, Jeter, and Tolefree look like they have been in the program for many years. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brennan had another undefeated season and made a very long play-off run.
During the game, I was caught on TV eating Church’s Chicken!!! A stat-man needs to eat and wasn’t anything greasy!!! Thanks to one of my Twitter followers for pointing it out:
