The Thursday game was the MacArthur Brahmas and the Johnson Jaguars. Both teams have already made the Playoffs…but, the loser of the game has to play the Steele Knights. Steele won the state championship in 2010, lost the state championship in 2011, lost in the state semi-finals in 2012, and lost to the Johnson Jaguars in the state quarterfinals last year. I kinda think that Steele was rooting for MacArthur to win so they can get some revenge on Johnson.
Finally, I get to see Josh Theissen from Johnson. Dude, last year as a sophomore, he had 967 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. This year, he switched to quarterback. It was also my first time to see another Josh…Josh Jung, the MacArthur Brahma quarterback. Coming into this game, he had over 2,200 passing yards with 20 touchdowns. So, which Josh would prevail?
The Johnson Jaguars defeated the MacArthur Brahmas by a score of 45 to 27 and avoided a rematch with the Steele Knights.
The Johnson Jaguars had 413 total yards. Theissen was only 3 of 6 passing but he had 122 yards!! He also had 16 carries for 136 yards and 4 touchdowns and a 39 yard reception. I will add em up…297 total yards!!! Mike Morgan had 14 carries for 66 yards and 1 touchdown and Khalil McPherson had 12 carries for 68 yards and 1 touchdown.
The MacArthur Brahmas had 311 yards. Jung was 19 of 33 passing for 205 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception and had negative rushing yards. Dai’jon Williams had 15 carries for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. Bobby Lepovitz had 6 receptions for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.
I would give the Josh award to Josh Theissen (who also has a very nice set of hair)!!!
All six of these players that I mentioned are juniors!! WOW!!!
The MacArthur Brahmas will play the Steele Knights Thursday at Alamo stadium.
The Johnson Jaguars will play the Clemens Buffaloes on Saturday at Texas State at 1 pm.
Last night, I was at Lehnoff stadium as the Steele Knights hosted the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars. This was also the final game in the press-box as it will be renovated (I think the demolition starts next week) and yeah, I already emailed the athletic director cause just like I did with Alamo stadium, I want to photograph it. I will let you know what happens!!!
I was definitely expecting the Steele Knights to defeat the Cougars who aren’t playoff bound, but never did I expect the way it really happened.
Before I dive into the score, I will tell you that I have been a statistician since 1997 and have witnessed a lot of blow-outs.
In 2011, I worked a Judson/San Marcos game and at halftime, Judson led 42 to 14 (they ran 16 plays for 331 yards and had the the ball for 4:28 and scored 6 touchdowns and they had 3 one play scoring drives!)
Last week, the Brennan Bears defeated the Stevens Falcons by a score of 55 to 14 and we had a running clock in the 2nd half.
Well folks, last night, may have very well topped both as Steele led 28 to 0 after the first quarter. Obviously, Canyon helped them by having 4 turnovers (2 of them returned for touchdowns by Jubias Cloud). Man, the first play of the 2nd quarter was a punt return for a touchdown by Jaylen Harris.
At halftime, Steele led 42 to 0!!! They had 199 yards to only 56 for the Cougars (with 4 turnovers).
The 3rd quarter started at 8:58 and ended at 9:11!!! Yeah, it took 13 minutes to play 12 minutes (thanks to a running clock). I kept wondering if their was a mercy rule? The game ended at 9:28 and the final score was Steele 49 and New Braunfels Canyon Cougars 0.
At 10:30, Bobby Stautzenberger does a live scoreboard show (I gather scores for the show) and since, we had an hour, Bobby made the executive decision to do the scoreboard show from his home and I was glad, cause that meant I got to be home an hour earlier!! I am pretty sure Bobby made it home in time for the show because I was almost at my Canyon Lake house at 10:30 and Bobby lives much closer than me. I was unable to hear it since I took off my car antenna (I get better reception on my blue-tooth device) and I was probably a bit out of range.
The Cougars were led by seniors Patrick Carpenter who had 16 carries for 45 yards and Raynard Taylor who had 22 carries for 108 yards. Carpenter was also 0 of 5 passing with 3 interceptions.
The Steele Knights played without starting quarterback, LG Williams, who has over 1,000 yards passing with 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions and also 450 rushing yards with 8 touchdowns. How bad would the score had been had he played?
Steele ran 32 plays for 304 yards. They had offensive, defensive, and special teams touchdowns. The quarterback, Xavier Martin, was 3 of 5 passing for 19 yards and 1 touchdown. On the ground, he had 2 carries for 36 yards and 1 touchdown. Martin is a sophomore!! Bryson Denley, a junior, had 7 carries for 50 yards and 1 touchdown and Travell Lumpkin, a sophomore, had 5 carries for 54 yards.
When you have a blow-out game, you normally would let the younger players play for experience (in Steele’s case, their young guns start over the seniors). So, in garbage time, it was nice to see seniors Moses Gonzalez, Raphael Watson, Jacob Weissmann, Troy Wyant, and Jaquan Gauff get some carries!!
If the Steele Knights win next week against MacArthur (which will happen) and the Brennan Bears win their game (which also will happen), Steele and Brennan will play each other on November 21st…it will only be the 2nd week of the Playoffs and one of the top teams in San Antonio will be eliminated!!! WOW!!! I hope I get that game!!!
