Those 2 teams are the Brennan Bears and the Steele Knights.
Brennan went winless in 2010 (which was their year of varsity football). In 2011, they went 7 and 4 (they lost in the the first round of the playoffs). In 2012, they had 13 wins and 1 loss (that loss came in the state quarterfinals). Last year, they went 15 and 1 (that loss came in the state championship game). This year, Brennan is 11 and 0!!!
Steele went 14 and 2 in 2010 (they won the state championship). In 2011, they went 15 and 1 (they lost in the state championship). In 2012, they had 14 wins and 1 loss (that loss came in the state semi-finals). Last year, they went 12 and 2 (they lost in the state quarterfinals). This year, Steele is 10 and 1!!!
Brennan stats:
Da’Shawn Key is 50 of 83 passing for 846 yards with 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions
Da’Shawn Key has 1,054 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns
Freshman Jahmyl Jeter has 483 rushing yards with 9 touchdowns
Junior Devante Warren has 442 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns
Junior Taveon Tolefree has 415 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns
Alex Hill has 270 rushing yards with 4 touchdowns
Makai Green has 235 rushing yards with 3 touchdowns
Wesley Moss has 487 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns
Dayne Thomas has 369 receiving yards with 6 touchdowns
Da’Shawn Key has been the Brennan quarterback since his freshman year and so far, he has 8,657 total yards with 114 total touchdowns!!! Pretty impressive numbers and I have had the pleasure to see him play many times. I know he will get a shot to play at the next level. Right now, I believe that UTSA is the only team to offer him a scholarship.
The Brennan defensive studs are: Devontre McGarity, Nathan Collier, Derrick Hill, and DJ Allen. They also have an offensive lineman, Mitchell Watanabe who is 6’5 and weighs 305 pounds.
Stephen Basore is the Head Coach at Brennan and has been the top man since 2010. He was an assistant under Brandeis Bronco Head Coach John Campbell and before that he and Campbell were assistants under Larry Pulin at Jay High School. Brennan beat Brandeis in the District 27-6A championship game and their could be a rematch in 3 weeks!!! WOW!!!
Steele stats:
LG Williams is 70 for 132 passing for 1,264 yards with 16 touchdowns and 3 interceptions
Junior Bryson Denley has 707 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns
Sophomore Travell Lumpkin has 509 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns
LG Williams has 501 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns
Jaylen Harris has 208 rushing yards and 1 touchdown
Jaylen Harris has 672 receiving yards with 6 touchdowns
Sophomore CJ Williams has 264 yards with 5 touchdowns
Junior Antoine Wesley has 258 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns
The defensive studs for Steele are: Mark Jackson, Chris Boring, Jubias Cloud, and Malik Perez. Mark Jackson (a junior) is already being recruited by many of the top college football programs.
The Head Coach for the Steele Knights since last year is Scott Lehnoff. If that name sounds familiar, it should…Scott is the son of Robert Lehnoff, the former Clemens High School football Head Coach and former Athletic Director for the school district. The stadium where Steele plays is called Robert and Glenda Lehnoff stadium (his mommy and daddy)!!! Oh, Scott, has been with Steele since 2005 and offensive coordinator since 2007 under Mike Jinks. Jinks is now the running back Coach at Texas Tech University.
These are all the Steele and Brennan games that I have worked this season (please check em out for stats and pictures):
9/4 – Smithson Valley vs. Brennan (Farris Stadium)
9/19 – Brennan vs Judson (DW Rutledge Stadium)
9/26 – Steele vs Smithson Valley (Ranger stadium)
10/3 – Clemens vs Steele (Lehnoff stadium)
10/31 – Stevens vs Brennan (Farris stadium)
11/7 – Steele vs New Braunfels Canyon (Lehnoff Stadium)
The common opponent is the Smithson Valley Rangers. Steele beat the Rangers 31 to 20 and Steele ran 60 plays for 385 yards (LG Williams had 200 total yards and 3 touchdowns). Brennan beat the Rangers 41 to 10 (Da’Shawn Key had 299 total yards of offense and 5 touchdowns…he had more yards then the entire Ranger football team).
Yeah, these teams are the cream of the crop in San Antonio, they have had a lot of success, and they are both fairly new schools (Brennan 2010 and Steele 2006). Steele got a state championship and Brennan can smell it!!
It is such a shame that one of these teams will lose and lose in the 2nd round!!
I kinda have a feeling that this game will be very close and quite possibly, the team with the ball last, will win.
The Alamodome will be home for 3 games this weekend as I get to see to 6 of top 10 teams in the San Antonio:
