Before I dive into the game and the players, I just want to say THANKS TO SAN ANTONIO SPORTS…the atmosphere was electric and I am so glad that 11,220 fans got to witness this awesome game.
For me, it was a great way to officially end the 2014 High School Football season. So, now it is time to unpack my stat backpack and very neatly and not in a hiding place put it all away for 8 months.
Dude, I got to see 100 of the best players in the San Antonio area representing 50 different schools play!!! I won’t be mentioning every player and school, so please take a look at the roster for both squads.
Even though I was familiar with the majority of the players involved, All Star games are always challenging for me…one, the players wear different numbers and two, their are so many substitution of quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers. Some plays even had the quarterbacks playing wide receiver!!! I had one quarterback for the East as completing 3 passes, but the official stats (yeah, we got a print-out from somebody) had those 3 passes for another quarterback. I am not going to say I am right and they are wrong (omg, I just did), but I could’ve sworn that I saw that particular quarterback taking snaps and throwing the ball. Plus, I have been a stat man since 1997!!!
The East squad had players from Steele and Judson (the last two teams standing in the area in the High School football playoffs). The West squad had players from Brennan, Brandeis, O’Connor, and Stevens. Man, all 6 of those schools were in the top 10 all season.
Yeah, it was cool to those particular players, but I was also really interested to see everybody else along with some of the smaller schools…Antonian, Bandera, Canyon Lake, Central Catholic, Cole, Holy Cross, Jourdanton, La Vernia, Medina Valley, Navarro, Poteet, Randolph, Sabinal, Saint Marys Hall, and San Antonio Christian School.
You have to give a lot of KUDOS to both head coach’s….John Campbell from Brandeis and David Wetzel from Reagan. They had probably less than a week to prepare and they made it look so easy. THANKS!!!
In the first quarter, LG Williams from Steele High School connected with his Steele teammate Jaylen Harris for a 39 yard touchdown for the East. Man, LG to Jalen…I have seen that many times!!!
In the second quarter, LG threw an 8 yard touchdown to Eric Tilghman form Wagner High School. Tilghman led Wagner last year with 1,400 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.
The East added a field goal and they led 17 to 0, but as time expired in the second quarter, Peyton Hall from Brandeis High School returned a kickoff for a 96 yard touchdown for the West. WOW!!! I am sure Peyton will see the end zone in The Dome many more times as he will be playing college football for UTSA.
At Halftime, the East led 17 to 7.
In the third quarter, LG threw his 3rd touchdown pass to Michael Akai from the Judson Rockets. The score was now East 24 and West 7. That was kinda strange seeing a Knight throw to a Rocket, but also pretty damn awesome. Akai had over 1,000 receiving yards for the Rockets last season and was definitely one of the main reasons why they had a long playoff run.
Dalton Banks from Alamo Heights High School scored on an 8 yard touchdown run for the East and they led 30 to 7 in the fourth quarter. Dalton had over 2,500 passing yards and 700 rushing yards for Alamo Heights and he will be taking his smarts and talents to Cornell University. WOW!!!
The final touchdown was scored by the West’s Troy Irby from the Brennan Bears.
The final score was East 30 and West 13.
West STATS
Quarterbacks
Trenton Ford, Clark Cougars — 2 of 5 for 33 yards
De’Shawn Key, Brennan Bears — 1 of 4 for 4 yards with 1 interception
Bobby Chacon, Stevens Falcons — 0 of 4 with 1 interception
I really would’ve liked to Bobby throw the ball with a bunch and obviously get some yards. I mean, all season long he was one of top quarterbacks in the city. Both Ford and Key are more dangerous running the ball. On Friday, I will talk much more about Chacon and Key and their overall stats.
Wide Receivers
Sean Thompson, Marshall Rams — 1 reception for 18 yards
Makai Green, Brennan Bears — 1 reception for 15 yards
Lee Terrell, Brackenridge Eagles — 1 reception for 4 yards
Makai should’ve gotten a lot more touches…this dude is super fast.
Running Backs
Da’Shawn Key, Brennan Bears — 6 carries for 76 yards
Troy Irby, Brennan Bears — 1 carry for 27 yards with 1 touchdown
Juan Ortega, Jay Mustangs — 4 carries for 13 yards
Daniel Tello, Burbank Bulldogs — 2 carries for 7 yards
Aedric Robinson, Warren Warriors — 1 carry for 6 yards
Greg Scott, Holy Cross Knights — 3 carries for 5 yards
Makai Green, Brennan Bears — 2 carries for 4 yards
Bobby Chacon, Stevens Falcons — 1 carry for 3 yards
Patricio Botello, Brandeis Broncos — 1 carry for -11 yards
Trenton Ford, Clark Cougars — 5 carries for -17 yards
See, I told you Key and Ford are more dangerous running the ball. Well, actually only Key as Ford was sacked several times.
East STATS
Quarterbacks
LG Williams, Steele Knights — 13 of 15 for 119 yards with 3 touchdowns
Dalton Banks, Alamo Heights Mules — 8 of 13 for 111 yards
Joseph Nava, Central Catholic Buttons — 3 of 3 for 35 yards
LG has been extremely efficient all year and his numbers were right on par to every game he played last season. He will playing for Texas State University. On Friday, I will be talking a lot more about LG and his overall stats.
This was my first time to see Banks and man, I was impressed.
Wide Receivers
Michael Akai, Judson Rockets — 3 receptions for 98 yards with 1 touchdown
Jaylen Harris, Steele Knights — 7 receptions for 83 yards with 1 touchdown
Sam Lorillard, San Antonio Christian Lions — 3 receptions for 26 yards
Josh Devries, Canyon Lake Hawks — 3 receptions for 21 yards
Eric Tighlman, Wagner Thunderbirds — 2 receptions for 19 yards with 1 touchdown
Joseph Nava, Central Catholic Buttons — 4 receptions for 15 yards
Ian Martinez, Harlandale Indians — 1 reception for 5 yards
Nathaniel Dillard, Roosevelt Roughriders — 1 reception for -2 yards
All season long, Harris and Akai have been two of top receivers in the area and on Saturday, they were magnificent. I am not sure where they will playing college ball, but I really hope somebody picks em both up.
Running Backs
Eric Tilghman, Wagner Thunderbirds — 8 carries for 32 yards
LG Williams, Steele Knights — 4 carries for 28 yards
Ryan Young, Navarro Panthers — 6 carries for 19 yards
Dalton Banks, Alamo Heights Mules — 4 carries for 17 yards with 1 touchdown
Joseph Nava, Central Catholic Buttons — 1 carry for 8 yards
Jerren Scott, Cole Cougars — 2 carries for 2 yards
Sam Lorillard, San Antonio Christian Lions — 1 carry for 0 yards
Jaylen Harris, Steele Knights — 1 carry for -2 yards
The MVP of the game was LG Williams from the Steele Knights. Last year, the MVP was another player from Steele and that was Justin Stockton. Stockton is a running back at Texas Tech and as a freshman, he had 48 carries for 396 yards with 4 touchdowns…those numbers were 2nd on the team for rushing!!! Pretty impressive!!! Maybe a Steele player will win the award at next year’s game and they can have a 3-peat. Bryson Denley is a very good possiblity…last year as junior, he had 924 yards with 12 touchdowns for the Steele Knights.
On Wednesday, I will publish Part 1 of THE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WRAP-UP BLOG which will be the game of the year, the most outstanding individual performance, the most unique press-box, Alamo stadium, the Judson Rockets, and the Steele Knights.
And, on Friday, I will publish Part 2 which will be my list of players to watch next season along with 3 outstanding seniors from last season…all of them played in this All Star game (Bobby Chacon, Da’Shawn Key, and LG Williams).
