Well, today, I will share my list of players to watch next season along with their stats. Please note, that this list is only from the games I worked.
But, first, let me talk about 3 players who all had marvelous senior seasons and I have the had pleasure of watching them play many many High School Football games not only last year but also in previous years. They are Bobby Chacon from the Stevens Falcons, LG Williams from the Steele Knights, and De’Shawn Key from the Brennan Bears.
Bobby Chacon was the starting quarterback for the Stevens Falcons. As a senior, he had 3,209 passing yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and 405 rushing yards with 8 touchdowns. In Week 12, Bobby was my PLAYER OF THE WEEK…dude had 295 passing yards and 146 rushing yards with 5 total touchdowns. If you look at the stat leaders for quarterbacks in the state of Texas, he was consistently in the top 5 all year.
De’Shawn Key was the starting quarterback for Brennan since his freshman year. He finishes with 8,816 total yards with 117 touchdowns. Man, I think that has gotta be one of the top overall performances in a 4 year span I have ever seen in my career as a stat man and I have been around since 1997. One player that comes very close is Jerrell Wilkerson from Clark High School (hey, it’s my alma mater…class of 1995). Jerrell had 110 rushing touchdowns and 7,249 rushing yards in his 4 years. Where is he now? That would be a great future BLOG…cause last I saw his name was back in 2010 where he did something stupid in San Antonio. Key was my PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN Week 2 as the Bears crushed the Smithson Valley Rangers by a score of 41 to 10. He had 299 total yards with 5 touchdowns.
As of this blog publishing, the only school to offer him a scholarship is UTSA and if he signs there, that would be awesome!!! National signing day is a few weeks away and I will definitely share my thoughts on that and will focus on UTSA and there players.
LG Williams was the starting quarterback for the Steele Knights since his junior year. He finishes with 5,352 total yards with 62 touchdowns. LG was the only player to win my PLAYER OF THE WEEK twice. In Week 6, he had 10 carries for 61 yards and 1 touchdown and 11 of 16 passing for 204 yards with 2 touchdowns. Add em up and LG had 265 total yards and 3 touchdowns. In Week 13, he had 23 carries for 133 yards and 1 touchdown and thru the air, he was 8 of 12 for 114 yards. He was also the MVP of the SA Sports All Star football game last weekend. LG will be playing at Texas State University.
