Brennan’s first year of football was 2010 and they went winless. In 2011, they had 7 wins and 4 loss’s (De’Shawn Key, a freshman, was the quarterback). In 2012, there only loss came in the state quarterfinal playoff game (Key had 2,380 total yards with 27 touchdowns). In 2013, there only loss came in the state championship game (Key had 3,869 total yards with 55 touchdowns). Ever since I saw the Judson schedule, this was a game I was excited to see!!!
Last week, the Rockets scored 44 points and had 542 yards of total offense and notched the first win of the season. The Bears came in to the game with a 3 and 0 record. I was telling my co-workers at the bank that the outcome of this game will depend on which Judson team shows up…by that, I meant, if the team from last week shows up, this will be a very close and extremely competitive gave and if it is the team from Week 1 and Week 2 where they were turnover happy and couldn’t get the offense going, this could be a blow-out game in favor of the Bears.
One minute into the 2nd quarter, Judson running back, Malik Taylor scored on a 42 yard rushing touchdown and that tied the game at 7!!! Man, we have a game.
At halftime, Brennan took a 17 to 7 lead. The Bears ran 35 plays for 211 yards (Key had 125 of those on his own) and the Rockets had 6:58 time of possession, 2 turnovers, and 101 total yards. Well, Judson is still in it despite being turnover prone and very inconsistent on offense.
I always hear media peeps say that the first possession of the 2nd half is IMPORTANT. Judson got the ball first and oh no, it was a 3 and out!!! Had they been able to score some points, who knows, maybe the outcome would’ve been different. The Bears added another score in the 3rd and going into the final quarter, they led 23 to 7. Two more scores from Brennan in the 4th quarter made the score 39 to 7. But, the Judson Rockets got the last score of the game on a long touchdown run by Nick Ortiz. The final score of the game was Brennan 39 and Judson 14.
The Brennan Bears ran 65 plays for 409 yards. They KEY player was indeed Da’Shawn Key, the quarterback. He was 10 of 12 passing for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns and he also had 20 carries for 91 yards and 1 touchdown. Freshman (yes, a freshman) running back, Jahmyl Jeter, had 10 carries for 60 yards and 1 touchdown. Remember his name!!! Dayne Thomas, a receiver, had 6 receptions for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. They had no turnovers and held the ball for 33 minutes!!!
The Rockers ran 44 plays for 210 yards. Key, for Brennan, had 221 by himself!!! Judson had 3 turnovers. Quarterback, Weston Vecasy, was 7 of 16 passing for 80 yards and 1 touchdown. Receiver, Nick Ortiz, led the receivers with 2 receptions for 42 yards. Malik Taylor, the starting running back, had 8 carries for 78 yards and 1 touchdown. Nick Ortiz had 3 carries for 50 yards and 1 touchdown. Freshman, Julon Williams, had 9 carries for 32 yards.
Judson is 1 and 3 and Brennan remains undefeated. Judson’s 25-6A District games start next week. Yeah, the streak of 37 consecutive winning seasons is definitely in jeopardy. They do have the toughest schedule overall in the state of Texas. Was a 1 and 3 start expected of them? Probably…Hendrickson is 3 and 1 (there only loss came to Brandeis) and Brandeis and Brennan are both 4 and 0. Man, there is a great chance that Brandeis and Brennan will face each other for the District 27-6A championship.
A really tough non-district schedule will help the Rockets in district play and as Monty Python sings, ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE.
Folks, I do read your social media comments about the Rockets and I agree with the majority of them. There needs to be a MAJOR change on offense and I am very glad that I am a just a stat man who loves to write and not a coach!!!
Next Thursday, I will be at Farris stadium as the O’Connor Panthers play the Jay Mustangs.
And, on Friday, I will be at Lehnhoff stadium as the Clemens Buffaloes host the Judson Rockets in the first district game.
