OK, so I went to Farris stadium for the Brennan Bears and Victoria West Warriors game. It was about 12:00 and radio air was 1:30. The stadium and parking lot were empty!!! At first, I was like, well maybe they changed the time. I went online and noticed they changed the venue to Heroes stadium; no time change though. Hmm, I never saw that update. I actually texted Mark Kusenberger, one of the TSRN broadcasters for the game and he confirmed.
Yep, folks, first time that has happened to me in my 17 years as a stat man!!! It was pretty funny and I am glad the stadiums were not that far from each other.
I eventually arrived at Heroes stadium around 12:45 and had time to hang the TSRN banners at the home and visitor entrances and even a radio banner in the stadium.
I was really excited to finally see the Brennan Bears this season. Last year, Brennan won 13 games and the only loss was to Cedar Park (they won the state championship) in the state quarterfinals. The majority of the key players were underclassmen.
Prior to the game against Victoria West, Brennan had 12 wins and 0 losses. They are one of the best (if not the best) defensive teams in the state of Texas. They have recorded 9 shut-outs and 30 total points given up!!! WOW!! Oh, they can also score as they average 58 points per game. DOUBLE WOW!!!
The Bears, when the season ends, may have three running backs with over 1,000 yards rushing and two of them are juniors!!! WOW!!! If that happens, that is pretty damn impressive!!!
The Victoria West Warriors had 8 wins coming into the game and two 1,000 yards rushers…one of them is a sophomore; they also have a junior wide receiver with just over 500 yards receiving.
I totally expected Brennan to win and dude, the game was over with 10:24 left in the first quarter as Brennan led 14 to 0 and extended that to 48 to 7 at halftime. In the 2nd half, we had a running clock! Yes, I said a running clock!!! I have never seen that in my 17 years as a stat man!!! Oh, Brennan won 60 to 7!!!
One of the stats I keep track of is time of possession and I had to scrap that for the 2nd half!!!
The Victoria West Warriors ran 45 plays for 166 yards. Quarterback Anthony Navarro was 10 of 18 passing for 121 yards and 1 touchdown and he also had 13 carries for 4 yards; he was one of the 1,000 yards rusher. The other, Zevaughn Shelton, was held to 42 yards.
The Bears defense are led by Derick Roberson (6’5 – 225 pounds), a defensive end who will play college ball at UT Austin and Grant Watanabe (5’10 – 210 pounds), a line backer who will be playing for thee Colorado Buffaloes next year. They along with the rest of the Bears were all over Victoria West.
I saw a quote by Roberson in the San Antonio Express News, “We need to be better prepared next week. They scored, so we have some things we need to fix. We have to be perfect.” I guess shut-outs are a standard for Brennan.
I would still say allowing 7 points is pretty impressive and this is the 3rd round of the playoffs and the competition is only going to get tougher each round.
The Brennan Bears ran 45 plays for 509 yards. Quarterback Deshawn Key was 8 of 10 passing for 152 yards and he also had 12 carries for 116 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nathaniel Wells had 6 carries for 73 yards and 3 touchdowns and Makai Green had 8 carries for 83 yards and 1 touchdowns. Can I call them the Three Speedy Amigos? The back-up running back, Alex Hill had 2 carries for 51 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Brennan Bears will play Leander Rouse Friday at 7:00 pm at Comalander stadium.
Brennan is on a mission and the ultimate goal is to play on Friday, December 20th in Arlington for the state championship and I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened.
TSRN has Judson, Steele, Brennan, Alamo Heights, LaVernia, and Falls City still alive in the 2013 High School football playoffs. WOW!!!
This afternoon, I will be at the Seguin Farmers Market with SOAPMARKED.COM. You can find us at in the parking lot of the auditorium at Texas Lutheran University from 3 pm to 6 pm. We will be the ones who smell good!!!
Tomorrow, I will be at TMI for a basketball game between the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets and the TMI Panthers.
I will have my Week 13 player of the week on Wednesday…it will be a quarterback; either Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey from Judson or Deshawn Key from Brennan. I will accept bribes!!!
I will be at Heroes stadium (I am pretty confident on that) on Friday for the Judson Rockets and Madison Mavericks
