On Friday, I was at Cabaniss (I don’t want to auto correct it to cannabis; stupid spell checker) field in Corpus Christi for the Judson Rockets and the Laredo United Longhorns AND the Steele Knights and the Edinburgh North Cougars. Man, I couldn’t have asked the “football gods” for anything better!!! Even though I was a bit under the weather (runny nose and cough), there was NO WAY I was going to call in sick!!
How ’bout some quick numbers on both games combined…116 points scored by the winning teams and 35 scored by the losing teams. Tally it up and we had two BLOW-OUTS and I expected that. I mean, the winning teams are far more athletic and faster than the losing teams. Hey, the teams that won played in Week 1 and I would love a rematch!!!
Maybe after the season ends, I can make up some stats and write a fake article for the rematch (OMG, I am brilliant…awesome idea; my brain is already writing it). Hmm, I can debut it on my HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WRAP-UP BLOG!
I have been to many many many stadiums, but would you believe this was my first trip to Cabaniss? I left my house at 9am and got home at 1am!! The drive to and from was easy since I cruised controlled most of the way…dude, when did the speed limit change to 75 MPH? On my home, I passed the LaVernia football team; they played at Calallen in Corpus Christi and won!!!
On the way up, I grabbed a pre-game meal at McDonalds and that is also what we all ate in between the games. On the way home, I wanted food but not fast food (I stopped at a Las Palapas like 5 miles from my home for breakfast tacts and a BIG DR PEPPER)….thanks a lot McDonalds; yes, it was delicious, but so not healthy for me. I am gonna get back to eating better and exercising when football season ends cause I haven’t done any of that since football started. But, the good the thing is I haven’t gained any weight!!!
Cabaniss field is not a state of the art stadium that I am used to, but it was sufficient. I had room in the press-box for my laptop and was very glad I had room to sit!!! The only downside was the fact that I couldn’t see the scoreboard and when I had to get that information, I had to lean forward and almost touch my face to the window.
The broadcasters for both games were Bobby Stautzenberger and the one and only Gabe Farias. I haven’t worked with Gabe in a long long time. We had about 90 minutes between games so Judson (not the school, but Bobby’s son) and I went on a battery and food run!!!
I gotta say that the press-box staff and Corpus Christi ISD staff were extremely helpful and friendly and made our day really smooth and easy.
Judson/Laredo United
The Judson Rockets defeated the Laredo United Longhorns 68 to 21. This game was actually tied at 14 after 1!!! Yeah, the Rockets exploded, but folks, that is nothing new for Judson this season. In there 10 other wins, they have scored 25, 28, 49, 54, 47, 72, 38, 71, 42, and 50 points!!! All I can say is WOW!!!
Laredo United ran 92 plays for 358 yards. The quarterback, Derek Esparza, was 24 of 43 passing for 216 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions and he also had 34 carries for 77 yards and 1 touchdown. I was impressed with Esparza as he never quit playing.
Eric Corona, one of the Laredo United receivers, had 6 receptions for 60 yards and for the season he had over 1,100 yards receiving. Guess what folks? He is a junior!!! WOW!!!
The Rockets ran 61 plays for 578 yards. The passing game was ON (it was held under 100 yards in the first 2 playoff games) as Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey was 17 of 19 for 282 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Ramsey also led all the running backs with 97 yards on 9 carries and 1 touchdown. WOW!!
Andre Wilson had 4 receptions for 59 yards and 1 touchdown (he needs 92 more yards to reach 1,000 for the season and I know he will get it), Cameron Johnson had a 44 yard touchdown reception, Nick Ortiz had 2 receptions for 85 yards and 1 touchdown, and Brandon Sanders had a 16 yard touchdown reception. Michael Akai had 5 receptions for 56 yards and Cedric Williams had 5 receptions for 87 yards.
Jo’Von Kyle, one of the 11 running backs used by Judson, had fantasy like numbers…5 carries for 25 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The Judson Rockets will play the Madison Mavericks Friday at 7:00 at Heroes stadium.
Madison has a duel threat quarterback in Cody Ennis, two really talented wide receivers in Ja’Michael Brown and Byron Daniels, and a running back not named Green who has 935 yards rushing this season…his name is Dominque Daniels!!! Dude, combined, those 4 players have 88 touchdowns!!!
I am going to predict the first team to 50 will win (and I really want that to be the Judson Rockets)!!!
Steele/Edinburgh North
Man, this game was over at the 10:26 mark in the 2nd quarter as Steele had a 42 to 0 lead!!! The Steele Knights went on to win the game by a score of 48 to 14.
The Edinburgh North Cougars ran 47 plays for 181 yards. Running back, Matt Whitesides, had 19 carries for 111 yards and 1 touchdown. Matt rushed for 1,502 yards this season and I know he will have more next year as a senior. WOW!!!
I was telling Gabe Farias a little about Steele before the game and I told him that the running back Justin Stockton and the quarterback LG Williams will play for about a 1 1/2 quarters and have unbelievable fantasy numbers and holy crap, for once, I was absolutely correct!!!
Justin Stockton had 7 carries for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns. For the season, he has 161 carries for 1,994 yards and 36 touchdowns. Yes, he is that good and will be running all over field for the Texas Tech Red Raiders next season and I know he will be a better collegiate player than Malcolm Brown.
In 2010, Malcolm was a senior on the Steele that won the state championship and Stockton was on that team as a freshman. In 2011, Steele lost the state championship and last year Steele lost in the semi-finals to the Katy Tigers. If Steele wins next week, they will play Katy again in the semi-finals!!!
LG Williams, the quarterback, was 7 of 10 passing for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior Jaylen Harris, had 4 receptions for 111 yards and 1 touchdown.
The back-up for Justin Stockton, is sophomore Bryson Denley. Denley had 11 carries for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns. Also running the ball for Steele was a freshman named Travell Lumpkin who had 4 carries for 11 yards and another sophomore named Christian Edmondson who had 5 carries for 14 yards. Steele is set for running backs for the next 3 years!!! WOW!!
The Steele Knights will play the Johnson Jaguars next Saturday at 7:00 at Bobcat stadium in San Marcos. I want Steele to win, but Johnson is the Cinderella team as they have already beaten Smithson Valley and Brandeis.
I wouldn’t be surprised if both Steele and Judson ended up playing on December 21st in Arlington for yet another state championship!!
Tomorrow, I will be at the Seguin Farmers Market with SOAPMARKED.COM. You can find us at in the parking lot of the auditorium at Texas Lutheran University from 3 pm to 6 pm. We will be the ones who smell good!!!
On Tuesday, I will be at TMI for a basketball game between the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets and the TMI Panthers.
I will have my Week 13 player of the week on Wednesday…it will be a quarterback; either Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey from Judson or Deshawn Key from Brennan.
I will be at Heroes stadium on Friday for the Judson Rockets and Madison Mavericks.
