I am extremely satisfied with the end results and I love getting the notifications…dude, take a look at the Tweet below as it is by far my most popular (I know now that I misspelled Friday, oh well)!!!
Judson will play Warren Frriday at DW Rutledge stadium.
8:42 PM – 15 Nov 13
Enough about self promotion…lets get down to the business of CONVERSE JUDSON ROCKET HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL.
On Friday night, I was at Comalander stadium for a first round playoff game between the Judson Rockets and the Churchill Chargers.
These teams played in Week 2 and the Rockets won 28 to 6. The Churchill Chargers ran 63 plays for 258 yards. Dimitri Flowers, the wide receiver, was held to 25 total yards of offense and quarterback Nate Pearson was held to 124 yards of total offense. The lone bright spot was running back Nico Smisek who had 18 carries for 89 yards. The Judson Rockets ran 56 plays for 415 yards. Jo’Von Kyle, a running back, had 14 carries for 118 yards. Brandon Sanders, another running back, had 11 carries for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns. Malik Pryor also scored a rushing touchdown. Rayjohn Austin- Ramsey, the Judson quarterback, was 6 of 14 passing for 138 yards and 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.
I was not expecting a similar score on Friday night. In fact, I expected a high scoring offensive explosion with Judson winning. One of my Twitter followers, @ericburkhart2, thought Judson would win in a BLOW-OUT!!!
Well, folks, the Judson Rockets won the game and the final score was 42 to 21. Yeah, kinda in between a close offensive explosion game and a blow-out. I gotta give a bunch of kudos to the Churchill Chargers as I think this was by far the toughest competition for the Rockets. Take away the Chargers 6 turnovers and just maybe, the outcome would’ve been different. I didn’t even notice the fact that both teams had 348 yards of offense…usually that is one half for Judson football!!
Nate Pearson, the Charger quarterback, was 17 of 34 passing for 220 yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions (one was returned for a touchdown). Nate also had 19 carries for 45 yards. Dimitri Flowers had 9 carries for 52 yards for 1 touchdown and 2 receptions for 30 yards and 1 touchdown. Lucas Saenz, had 6 receptions for 70 yards. Dimitri will be playing at Oklahoma next year…remember his name cause he is gonna be really good for Bob Stoops and the Sooners.
Nico Smisek, the junior Churchill running back, had 11 carries for 31 yards and 1 touchdown and also 6 receptions for 88 yards. Nico had a great season (955 yards rushing) and I am really looking forward to seeing him be the main dude next season for the Chargers. Oh, his dad is Kevin Smisek, who is the head basketball coach at St. Anthony and when football season is over for me, I will switch gears by attending some St. Anthony Yellow Jacket basketball games (I did it last year and it was so much fun for me). Coach Smisek is such an awesome and very friendly person. I actually made it my duty on Friday to go say hi to him before the game started. Coach’s kids always make the best and smartest athletes!!
Of the Judson Rockets 348 yards, 261 came on the ground (yep, old school powerhouse Judson football). Churchill didn’t allow big plays from the Judson passing game. Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey, the quarterback, was only 9 of 11 passing for 87 yards and 1 touchdown (normally, that is one quarter for Ramsey). Michael Akai, had 3 receptions for 52 yards and that lone touchdown.
Jo’Von Kyle led the Judson running backs with 11 carries for 103 yards and 1 touchdown. Ramsey had 11 carries for 52 yards, Malik Pryor had 9 carries for 52 yards and 1 touchdown, Brandon Sanders had 8 carries for 29 yards, Andre Wilson had 2 carries for 10 yards, Malik Taylor had 5 carries for 6 yards, and Cedric Williams had 1 carry for a 9 yard touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, D’Mauria Martin, intercepted two passes (returning one for a 31-yard touchdown) and Shaquille Crane returned a fumble 30 yards for a TD. Man, it is always a PLUS when the defense scores touchdowns!!
The Judson Rockets will play the Warren Warriors on Friday at D W Rutledge stadium.
Warren’s record is 9 wins and 2 losses and they had 7 wins and 1 loss in district 27-5A. One of those losses was to the Churchill Chargers in Week 1. They also lost the following week to the Brandeis Broncos but since then, they have reeled in 8 wins in a row.
The Warren Warriors kinda remind me of the Smithson Valley Rangers. Both have a dual threat quarterback, a powerful running back, a talented receiving core, a very good defense, and a super smart legend of a coach.
So, let me give you names and numbers to watch on Warren for next Friday: quarterback (12) Jordan Sneed, running back (4) Aedric Robinson, wide receivers (21) Mark January, (5) Sean Eddington, (17) Jeremy Garcia, and defensive tackle (55) Trey Lealaimatafao (he will playing at UT next year). The head coach for Warren is Bryan Dausin (he was the head coach at Roosevelt when they won the 1995 5A Division II state championship)…that same year, the Judson Rockets won the 1995 5A Division I state championship.
The Warriors are averaging 41 points per game and I am expecting a shoot-out with the Judson Rockets. I know that Warren will fight and play hard till the end, but when the game is over, the Judson Rockets will be on the winning side.
On Friday, I tethered my Samsung Galaxy S3 to my laptop so I could use the smartphone data plan on the laptop (I have never done that before). And, hey, it worked really fast and I was still able to use the data plan on the smartphone at the same time. The reason I had to do that is because Comalander stadium doesn’t have WiFi or a local area connection like D W Rutledge stadium and I just feel it is easier for me to use my laptop to Tweet and get scores than my smartphone.
I will be back at D W Rutledge stadium on Friday for the Judson and Warren 2nd round playoff game. It will be nice to back home at Rutledge as Dickeys BBQ on FM 78 will feed us…Comalander stadium doesn’t provide food and I didn’t want to waste money at the concession stands. But, when I got home, I had Golden Wok Beef Fried Rice in the fridge and that was my very very late dinner. Thank you to my wife and my Mom for ordering it for me when they had lunch earlier in the day. All this food is making me hungry.
I guess this would be a great place to stop writing and insert some photos and promote this everywhere so I can have some breakfast.
