In that Week 5 game, I got a sunburn cause I wasn’t prepared for heat. On Saturday, I didn’t have to worry about the sun since it was night game, but I wasn’t prepared for the cold. Yes, I had a lightweight long sleeve button down shirt, but I really should’ve brought a jacket cause I was cold!! The only warm place was in the mens bathroom!!!
I just love the atmosphere, the camaraderie amongst the fans and the players, and dude, watching the game from the field is so much better than being in the press-box. I can very easily get used to doing this!! OK, so my ideal High School football life would consist of TV games on Thursday, TSRN games on Friday, and whatever the heck I choose on Saturday (but, this would be the freelance sports writer coming out). Maybe I can make that happen next season.
A friend of mine, Anthony Lecocke, came with me to the game and I was so happy that I had someone to talk to but also also to talk FOOTBALL!!
During halftime, we drifted over to the press-box as the broadcasters for the online broadcast for St. Anthony were Mark Thomas and Jay Riley with Nick Medina on stats. I have worked a bunch games with Mark and I trained Nick on stats (he also does spotting and broadcasting). As for Jay Riley, I haven’t seen him in like 5 years.
Oh, I also introduced myself to Mike Considine (he is one of my Twitter followers and I follow him). You can follow him on Twitter @SportsSASouth.
Check out his website @ http://sportsonsouthside.com/. His BLto OG covers high school baseball, boys basketball, girls basketball, football, softball and girls volleyball for Brackenridge, Burbank, Central Catholic, East Central, Edison, Harlandale, Highlands, Holy Cross, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lanier, McCollum, Memorial, Providence, Sam Houston, South San, Southside, Southwest and Young Women’s Leadership Academy.
The majority of the schools that Mike covers are ones that I don’t normally get a chance to work, so my BLOG and his BLOG compliment each other very well.
Mike was doing the stats for the San Antonio Express, so any stats I cite are courtesy of Mike Considine.
Even though the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets lost the game, all the players played hard till the very end and that is another reason why I love attending Yellow Jackets sporting events…they never give up.
On the Austin St. Michael’s team, I was impressed with Reed Carlton, Jameson Houston, and Patrick Doyle. Carlton is the quarterback and he was 9 of 12 passing for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 10 carries for 144 yards and 1 touchdown. Jameson Houston, a running back, had 11 carries for 110 yards and 1 touchdown. Patrick Doyle, another running back, had 4 carries for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Brandon Armstrong and Michael Mayer split time at quarterback for the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets. Lazaro Chavez had 1 reception for 9 yards, Jordan Torrens had 1 receptions for 5 yards, Kevin Stone had 6 receptions for 146 yards, Lee Martinez had 1 reception for 41 yards, and Justin Mayer had 3 receptions for 16 yards.
Henry Sanchez had 8 carries for 35 yards, Lazaro Chavez had 8 carries for 35 yards, Kevin Stone had 1 carry for 26 yards, Lee Martinez had 2 carries for 0 yards, Michael Mayer had 11 carries for -22 yards, and Chris Gutierrez had 1 carry for 0 yards.
Marc Rybczynski was injured and didn’t play for St. Anthony, but he should be ready to go next week. It was his mom, Diana, who invited me to come out to a Yellow Jacket football game. Thanks Diana.
Next Friday, the Yellow Jackets play Corpus Christi John Paul II and if they win, they will make the playoffs (if that is not correct, please let me know) and if that playoff game is local and on a Saturday, I will be there!!!
Tomorrow, I will share NEW photos of the Alamo stadium renovation.
Thursday (which is also the last TNL game), I will be at Heroes stadium for the Churchill Chargers and the Lee Volunteers. The head basketball coach at St. Anthony is Kevin Smisek and his son Nico is the starting running back at Churchill. I will be hanging out with the Yellow Jacket basketball team when football season is over (I did this last year and it was an absolute blast).
On Friday, I will be at Unicorn stadium in New Braunfels as the Judson Rockets play the New Braunfels Unicorns.
