I arrived at the game at 6:25, scarfed down some Church’s Chicken, and set myself up for stats. TV air time starts at 7:00 so I was kinda rushed!!! The reason…well, it took me 90 minutes to drive 17 miles (1604 and Stone Oak to 1604 and Hausman). But, I found the culprit…it wasn’t a hottie pulled over on the side of the road, it wasn’t a 10 car accident, it wasn’t a speeder being ticketed, nor was it an old lady driving 10 mph!! It was actually the traffic signal at 1604 and Kyle Seale which was green for 2 seconds. I am serious. I timed it!!
I was totally expecting a blow-out in favor of the Broncos which did eventually happen, but the Marshall Rams kept the game close until the last 2 minutes of the third quarter. It was 23 to 0 Brandeis at that point but back-to-back 30 yard interceptions returned for touchdowns by the Dayden Wooster (he has been the starting running back for Brandeis but on Thursday, he started on defense) and Kadarius Lee of Brandeis put the score at 37 to 0!!! The Brandeis Broncos won the game by a score of 50 to 6.
The Marshall rams ran 46 plays for 129 yards. Quarterback, Dominic Ramirez, had 102 of those yards with 1 touchdown pass and 2 interceptions.
The Brandeis Broncos ran 53 plays for 360 yards. Brian Chapman and Larry Stephens were my Week 5 stat/players of the week when they had monster numbers…Chapman was 10 for 15 passing for 225 yards and 4 touchdowns and Stephens had 5 receptions for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns. Well, folks, on Thursday night, Brian Chapman, the quarterback, was 2 for 11 passing for 48 yards and 1 touchdown and Larry Stephens, the wide receiver was stat-less (wow, that is first time I am using that word) !!! Man, in the first half, both quarterbacks combined to go 0 for 11. WOW!!!
The Brandeis running game was superb. Sophomore’s Jaylen Dukes had 22 carries for 155 yards and Tommy Woods had 8 carries for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns. Yes, both are sophomores…WOW!!! Brian Chapman, the quarterback, had 3 carries for 6 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sean Mellish, a Freshman wide receiver for Brandeis, had the only two receptions of the game for 48 yards and 1 touchdown.
On the defensive side, Dayden Wooster and Kadarius Lee had back-to-back interceptions returned for a touchdown and Corey Hayes had a fumble return for a touchdown. Cory’s Dad, Derrick, wrote a guest blog for me last season. And, Cory was our player of the game!!!
With the victory, Brandeis is very likely going to be the District 27-5A champion, but I know they have a goal and that is goal is to be the state champion, which could happen.
Tonight, I will be a FAN as I will be attending the St. Anthony Yellow Jacket football game at Benson stadium as the host Austin St. Michael’s. I will be dragging a friend of mine to the game and am looking forward to a pleasant evening.
