Man, I did double duty on stats as this was a TNL and a TSRN game; boy, it sure would be nice to get double paid!!! To be honest, it was actually fairly easy for me cause I have done double duty before. I just had to hang the TSRN banners and text the scoring drives to Bobby. For the halftime and end of game stats, I snapped a picture and emailed it to Bobby.
I did run around like a maniac and sweated a lot (obviously before the game started) to secure the banners and grab something from Bobby’s truck (the bed of his truck is covered so I seriously had to dive in to get it).
I was planning to take off (hmm, I wonder where the plane is taking me) when the game ended, but I just couldn’t leave Bobby alone to pack everything up and haul all the equipment down the short flight of stairs…call it 17 years of loyalty!! The reason I wanted to scoot out and get home was my wife and I have been sharing a car and our wake-up time in the morning is 6:15. Well, I ended up getting home at 10:45 instead of probably like 10:15 and was in bed sleeping by 11:15; yep, 7 hours of sleep and I wanted more, much much much more!!
I still haven’t had a chance to make a snack run so I made sure to pack enough food and snacks from home to last me all throughout the day. I had a bagel with tuna (made by Mom), butter, and cheese, turkey deli meat, grapes, a strawberry cereal bar from Trader Joe’s, trail mix (pecans, honey roasted peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds), meatloaf with rice a roni (also made by Mom), and ice cream supplied by work.
At the game, I grabbed a plate of Coopers BBQ at the TV truck and the Church’s chicken dude hand delivered a box of chicken, biscuits, fish, and shrimp to us in the press-box before the game started.
And, when I got home, I had leftover Matzha Ball soup (again, made by Mom).
Yeah, I like to eat and I am spoiled sometimes when it comes to food.
Don’t worry, I did have a lot of drinks to go with all the food I consumed…waters, Gatorades, and a coke!
You know something, Lehnhoff stadium is one of my favorite stadiums in San Antonio. It hasn’t been renovated or torn down so it has that oldie feeling, the vantage point of the press-box to the field is excellent, and you can open the windows in the press-box and hear the roar of the fans. The only thing I don’t like about the press-box is the fact that it is always hotter than the Sahara desert!! But, I came prepared on Thursday night. No, I didn’t bring my own portable a/c unit, I instead dressed way down and extremely cool as I changed at work from khaki pants and a polo shirt to athletic shorts and a t-shirt!
I saw Steele in Week 1 and they have a very very good running game with Justin Stockton and LG Williams (so far, the best rushing duo I have seen in a long time) and the defense is very questionable even though they did force 7 turnovers last week (but most were at the fault the Judson quarterback). In Week 0, they gave up 46 points to the Madison Mavericks.
The last time I saw Kerrvile Tivy, Johnny Manziel was a sophomore wide receiver. So, yeah, been a long time!! Johnny did play quarterback that evening since the starting quarterback was ineffective and he willed his Tivy team to a miraculous come from behind victory. OMG, that game was also played at Lehnoff stadium, but the opponent was the Clemens Buffaloes. Did robert lehnoff coach them?
Dude, I also saw Steele running back, Justin Stockton make his debut at Lehnoff stadium in 2010 as a FRESHMEN on aThursday Night Lights television game. Justin and the Steele Knights won the state championship in 2010, lost in 2011, came within 1 game of 3 consecutive state championship games in 2012, and who knows what will happen in 2013!!!
I was kinda expecting a Steele blowout but in the back of my football mind, I was hoping for a close game!!
Well, folks…this game was over at halftime as the Steele Knights led 42 to 7. The final score was Steele 49 and Kerrville Tivy 7. I always feel bad when a team is down by such a huge margin at halftime. How and where do they even find the self-motivation to play for 24 more minutes? I am still waiting, and I know it will happen, for a team to win a game after being basically crushed in the first half. That would be the game of the century!!!
I am not a fan of blowouts, but when they do happen, it is fun cause everybody gets to play and my stat board gets a lot of action from my markers. One of these players was our player of the game and he is only a sophomore.
I do gotta give kudos to Kerrville Tivy. I mean, they were playing without 2 really important players…wide receiver Tyler Ahrens and running back Adrian Medron. The Antlers never gave up and played hard till the end of the game.
The Kerrville Tivy Antlers ran 48 plays for 120 yards. Call it poor offense or really good Steele defense? The Antlers used 3 quarterbacks, Ryon Mays, Bailey McKinney, and Reed Jones…combined they were 8 for 20 for 73 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception. That lone touchdown reception went to Jess Conner who caught 2 passes for 29 yards. William Randall, the running back, had 13 carries for 49 yards.
The Steele Knights ran 57 plays for 536 yards…426 of those came on the ground from 10 running backs.
Justin Stockton – 8 carries for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns
LG Williams – 5 carries for 80 yards
Justin is the starring running back and LG is the starting quarterback and they only played one half.
Keshawn Brown – 6 carries for 56 yards and 1 touchdown
DeAngelo Wallace – 1 carry for 16 yards
Tyler Wagner – 2 carries for 8 yards and 1 touchdown
Darrius Pettaway – 3 carries for 20 yards and 1 touchdown
Cody Hicks – 3 carries for 20 yards
James Gilbert – 6 carries for 26 yards
Bryan Soske – 4 carries for 16 yards
AND
BRYSON DENLEY – 9 CARRIES FOR 112 YARDS (sophomore and player of the game)
I have only seen Denley play 2 games, but he could end up being the next great running back at Steele. He was extremely emotional when David Chancellor, our sideline reporter, presented the player of the game trophy to him…this was likely the first award of many to come for him.
Bryan Soske’s Dad is in the military overseas and we know he watched the game online. It must have bought tears to his eyes when he saw his son get
some carries late in the game. And, when the game ended, Chancellor, was able to get Bryan and his sister to say hi Dad!!! Man, I almost cried…that is why I love this game of high school football. STORIES EVERYWHERE.
The passing game of Steele of starter LG Williams and back-up Tyler Wagner were 6 of 10 for 110 yards and 1 touchdown. That lone touchdown went for 16 yards to Matt Moen (he has committed to play for Nevada).
Tonight, I will be at the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex as the Devine Warhorses visit the Sam Houston Hurricanes.
