The Judson Rockets are my “home team.” I have been working Converse Judson football games on the Texas Sports Radio Network for 10 years.
The Churchill Chargers are my “bandwagon team.” The Chargers starting running back is Nico Smisek and Nico’s Dad is the head basketball coach at St. Anthony. Last year, I attended several St. Anthony basketball games (I was invited by Coach Smisek) and blogged about them. One of the basketball players is also a running back on the St. Anthony football team and his Mom wants to me attend some football games and blog about them. I am going to do that on 10/5 and 11/2. I am not gonna do stats at those games…I am gonna enjoy the game as a fan!!! I can’t wait.
Last night was FRIDAY THE 13TH and our broadcast could’ve been an episode of the Twilight Zone!
To be honest, I didn’t even feel like doing stats!! And I know my stat boards weren’t happy either…I like to be on the left side and last night I was on the right side (and even though I had a window, I felt awkward opening the blinds as the room I would have been looking at all night was full of people) so I put my stat boards directly in front of me on the window.
OK, so at Heroes stadium, we know what booth we broadcast from and have always occupied that booth. Well, last night, ESPN radio 1250, got our booth and that booth also happens to have the only digital phone line in the entire press-box (yes, we tried every single jack in every single room) and no dial tones!!!
We ended up on the 3rd floor with no phone line, but somehow Bobby (being a master engineer and with the help from KLUP’s Al Johnson and TSRN’s Lynn Michaels), we were able to broadcast the game. Now, I was trying to help Bobby set-up but when he asked for certain cables and plugs, I was totally plugless (I have no clue)!!!
I have been with Bobby and TSRN for 17 years and last night has gotta to be one of the worst engineering situations I have ever been a part of.
Unlike last week, where I was not thoroughly prepared for the Jordan Ford Friday Night Scoreboard show that Bobby hosts at 10:30 from the stadium, last night, I had everything and was even looking forward to updating the scores on the tsrnsports.com website. Unfortunately, due to not having a phone line, we had to call in Mark Kusenberger to host it.
Yeah, that is enough of me ranting…time to talk about Judson Rocket and Churchill Charger football. Man, it seems that every time these teams collide, it is a slug-fest. Heck, just a few years ago, the Chargers shut-out the Rockets in Converse.
I saw the Chargers last week where they exploded for 36 points and 425 yards and crushed the Warren Warriors (the Warriors scored 62 points in there opener). The big 3 of Churchill, running back Nico Smisek, quarterback Nate Pearson, and wide receiver Dimitri Flowers each had over 100 yards of offense. Nate and Dimitri were my Week 1 players/stats of the week!!!
Judson, last week, ran 92 plays for 591 yards against the Steele Knights. The Rockets would’ve easily had more yards and plays and probably an easy victory had they not had 7 turnovers. So, of those 591 yards, 414 were passing yards!!! Quarterback Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey was 27 for 45 for 377 yards and 2 touchdowns and wide receiver Andre Wilson caught 12 of them for 183 yards and 1 touchdown (he also threw for 1 touchdown).
On Thursday, the San Antonio Express asked a Twitter question…Which QB/WR tandem has impressed you the most and why? Well, my answer was included for the world to see…@mdlblog: Judson’s Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey and Andre Wilson. Yes, Judson passing! That made my day and I even sent a Tweet to Andre (he is a follow of mine)!!! I am becoming more and more famous everyday and I love it!!!
Yeah, both of the teams have high potent offenses but I was not expecting a shootout where the first team to 50 wins!!! I also was not expecting a blowout by either team. I was kinda expecting a battle and a really tight game.
The final score of the game was Judson 28 and Churchill 6. It wasn’t a shootout, a blowout, nor a close game!!
The Churchill Chargers ran 63 plays for 258 yards. Dimitri Flowers, the wide receiver, was held to 25 total yards of offense and quarterback Nate Pearson was held to 124 yards of total offense. The Rocket defense really focused on stopping Flowers. The lone bright spot was running back Nico Smisek who had 18 carries for 89 yards. The Chargers offense likes to slow down the temp and there only touchdown came on a 93 yard drive. I don’t remember the exact number of plays and time, but trust me, it was a very nice drive!!
The Judson Rockets ran 56 plays for 415 yards. Jo’Von Kyle, one of the seven running backs used last night, had 14 carries for 118 yards and would you believe that this was the first time this season a Judson running back has rushed for over 100 yards? Brandon Sanders, another running back, had 11 carries for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns. Malik Pryor also scored a rushing touchdown. That last name should be very familiar to Judson fans!!!
Rayjohn Austin- Ramsey was 6 of 14 for 138 yards and 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions That lone touchdown pass was to Andre Wilson.
Last week, Judson had 7 turnovers…this week, only 2. But, they had 12 penalties for 95 yards.
The Judson Rockets are looking really good and I know they will put everything together and make a long playoff run.
Oh, at the next Judson game, I am going to Tweet stats to @judsonfootball!!
Tonight, I will be at the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex as the Devine Warhorses visit the Sam Houston Hurricanes.
