Last weekend was the first week of both High School football and college football and I couldn’t help but notice that SEVERAL FORMER TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL QUARTERBACKS MADE A REMARKABLE DEBUT FOR SOME BIG TIME COLLEGES and that was absolutely awesome.
Syracuse Orangemen – San Antonio Alamo Heights Mules
Drew Allen - 16 of 37 for 189 yards and 2 interceptions
Texas Tech Red Raiders – Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers
Baker Mayfield – 43 of 60 for 413 yards with 4 touchdowns
Baker was the starting quarterback for Lake Travis last year and I saw him in Week 0 when they played the Judson Rockets. Baker’s passing stat’s that evening were mind boggling…23 for 35 passing for 418 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. He is one of the best passing quarterbacks I have ever seen at the High School level.
Oklahoma Sooners – San Antonio Reagan Rattlers
Trevor Knight – 11 of 28 for 86 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception and 13 carries for 103 yards
The last game I worked in which Trevor was the QB was back in Week 8 of the 2011 season. Trevor was superb as he was 7 for 14 passing for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns and he also ran the ball 14 times for 70 yards and 1 touchdown. That was actually a prototypical day at the office for Trevor and I got to see him work several times. He is definitely more dangerous running the ball.
Oklahoma State Cowboys – Denton Guyer Wildcats
JW Walsh – 18 of 27 yards for 135 yards and 13 carries for 135 yards with 1 touchdown
In 2010, I worked a state championship game in Arlington at Cowboy’s stadium between the Cibolo Steele Knights the Denton Guyer Wildcats. The QB for Guyer was JW Walsh…he is a smart player and the son of a football coach (his Dad is the head coach at Denton Guyer). Steele defeated Guyer and JW didn’t stand out for me in that game as much as Steele players Malcolm Brown and Tommy Armstrong did. Malcolm is a running back for the UT Longhorns and Tommy is a QB for Nebraska (I am awaiting on his debut cause he can run and pass…no pun intented, but he has a strong arm).
JW is going to be the starter next Saturday for the Oklahoma State Cowboys and guess who and where they play? They play UTSA at the Alamodome!!!
OMG, how can I forget…
Texas A & M Aggies – Kerrvile Tivy Antlers
Johnny Manziel – 6 of 8 for 94 yards and 3 touchdowns
I saw him play at Kerrville Tivy as a Sophomore, but at wide receiver. Manziel switched to QB since the starting QB was ineffective. Not many athletes can do what Manziel did that evening. He threw two touchdown passes in the last minute to catapult Tivy to a 31-30 victory. That game was also the start of an extremely impressive high school football career and every Friday night was an offensive explosion for Johnny. So, let me give you the total numbers for Johnny Manziel..153 touchdowns and 11,538 yards both as a QB and Running Back in High School. I write a blog post about Kerrville Tivy last June and I told everybody to watch for Manziel at A &M!!!
Well, Johnny won the Heisman last year as a FRESHMEN. His overall passing stats…295 of 434 for 3,706 yards with 26 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Rushing the ball, he had 201 carries for 1,410 yards with 21 touchdowns.
Who will be the next former Texas High School football quarterback to make a splash in there debut?
