You know something, you normally don’t see any females in the press-box unless they are spouses or friends of somebody who is part of the media. Only once did I see a female sports reporter in the press-box and that was at a Judson Rocket football game at D W Rutledge stadium…she stood out because she was a tall blonde!! Why aren’t there more females in the media?
Last season, I worked two Warren Warriors games and one of those games was against the Brandeis Broncos; in that game there were 36 total penalties for 224 yards…it was out of control. Well, I complained about the officiating and the head official found my article and emailed me…he found my comments offensive. After several email exchanges, he told me he worked the replay booth at UTSA Football games. I also worked UTSA football games as the stat man for Spanish radio and our booth was next to to the replay booth…oh no, I am gonna have to meet him. When I did finally meet him, he was super nice and friendly and we talked football…never even bought up the Brandeis/Warren game.
So, for the game last night, he was the head official again and I have learned my lesson!!! Now, our broadcasters, Mark Kusenberger and Bobby Stautzenberger, were kinda wondering why he kept calling the number of the player on penalties? When I got home, I got an email from another official from the Texas Association of Sports Officials and he provided the answer which I forwarded to Bobby and Mark…This year the UIL removed the exception to the NCAA rules which they have had in place for many years which prohibited that announcement. We are now to announce the fouling player’s number (if we have it). Cool, now I have someone to contact if I or anybody else has some rules-related questions.
My first two Week 0 games were close games…Roosevelt defeated Stevens on Thursday 39 to 27 and on Friday Judson beat Lake Travis 25 to 19.
Man, last night was not close…it was a a BLOWOUT. The Warren Warriors scored 62 points (that is not a typo) and MacArthur scored 14. I am not a fan of blowout games, but when they do happen, everybody gets to play and I love seeing the back-ups for the back-ups playing in garbage time.
The MacArthur Brahmas ran a total of 55 plays for 262 yards. Last season Demetrius Brock led the team in receiving and rushing yards. Last night, he had just 4 touches and 19 yards of total offense.
Steven Cardone, the Mac quarterback, was 16 for 31 passing for 107 yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. His back-up, Josh Jung, was 4 for 4 passing for 108 yards with 1 touchdown. The leading receiver for Mac was Ashton Glen, who had 4 receptions for 112 yards and 1 touchdown which was for 75 yards from Jung. I smell a quarterback controversy!!
The Warren Warriors ran 71 total plays for 517 yards. They were 5 of 7 on 4th down conversions, but 4 of those conversions were touchdowns. I have never seen a team score that many times on 4th down…pretty amazing!!
Ronald Jacobs, the starting running back, led the team with 78 yards on 9 carries and 1 touchdown. His back-ups, Adreic Robinson had 6 carries for 56 yards and Aaron Andazola had 11 carries for 41 yards and 1 touchdown. The quarterback, Jordan Sneed, had 10 carries for 74 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Sneed was also 13 for 22 passing for 161 yards with 1 touchdown. His back-up, Chris Casias, was 6 for 10 passing for 103 yards with 1 touchdown. Sneed and Casias distributed the ball to 8 different wide receivers. Sean Eddington had 3 receptions for 73 yards and 1 touchdown (Sean is the starting defensive back). Mark January had 6 receptions for 51 yards and Jeremy Garcia had 2 receptions for 43 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Warren defense forced 3 interceptions and 2 of them were returned for touchdowns. Trey Lealaimatafao, a defensive tackle for Warren, is really good and you if you playing against him, please make sure you know where he is cause if not, he is gonna get you. I really wanted to stop doing stats for a few plays and just watch Trey. He has already committed to play at UT Austin.
Warren missed the playoffs last year but that won’t happen this year…they looked really sharp and ready for a long playoff run.
Tomorrow, I will publish new photos of the renovation at Alamo stadium and the convocation center.
If you want to use any of my photos, all I ask for you to give me credit (photo courtesy of Mark Lieberman from mdlblog.com):
Next Friday, I will be at D W Rutledge stadium as the Judson Rockets host the Steele Knights.
And, on Saturday, I will be at a stadium TBD (as soon as I know, I will update my Week 1 schedule). I have requested Warren and Churchill!
