Even though Brennan is the newest High School in the Northside Independent School District, they don’t have the enrollment numbers yet to play with their fellow Northside schools. So, they got placed in the District with the San Antonio Independent School District High Schools. Man, I feel really bad for those SAISD schools, cause Brennan could very easily steamroll thru the rest of the District games and be one of only two or three teams that could end the season undefeated. WOW!!! Did I mention that this is Brennan’s 3rd year of varsity football? Impressive!!
At the end of this season, Alamo stadium will get some much needed and way overdue renovations. I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing the new look of Alamo stadium next year. Maybe this will catapult the stadium to get some playoff games in the future! I really hope they leave the iconic field, stands, and brick facade alone!!
I still remember my first time in the Alamo stadium press-box and it wasn’t for a high school football game. Our neighbor played for the San Antonio Gunslingers and I was really good friends with his son who was a year older than me and he had a birthday party at Alamo stadium!!! We had lunch and cake in the press-box then ran around the field!!! It was an awesome experience and one that I will always remember! I just wish I had kept in touch with my friend.
Texas Bob wrote a guest post for me on Inside the Huddle about football stadiums. He also started the Football Stadium Hall of Fame and Alamo stadium is one of the stadiums so far to be included in it. Hey, that is pretty cool!!!
Doing stats at Alamo stadium for TV is always a challenge for me. The booth is small and cramped; my cubicle at work is bigger!!! The TNL banner blocks my view of the scoreboard and even though there is a wall for my large stat board, there is no room for me to place my small stat board that I use for drive summary, time of possession, and how long a particular play was. In addition, I am standing on top of cables and I have a light and a camera next to me. Don’t ask me how many times I bumped into them. Oh, I also had to do a 180 when I updated the stats on the laptop and at the same time I had to make sure I didn’t get tangled in cables.
Enough complaining about the press-box…next time I visit the stadium, it will be much better. I took quite a few pictures of the stadium and press-box, I guess I should talk about the game.
The game began with a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Brackenridge!!! WOW!!! Twelve seconds!!! On the very next play, Brackenridge recovered an onside kick! It was an absolute perfect start but unfortunately, the Eagles couldn’t do anything after those plays as they were knocked out on offense and had no answer for the incredible Brennan running game.
Thru three quarters, the offensive numbers were lopsided in Brennan’s favor and the game was tied at 14 to start the 4th quarter!!! This was totally not what I was expecting! I was expecting Brennan to cruise to an easy victory. When the game ended, Brennan looked like the undefeated team by scoring 28 points in the final quarter…Brackenridge only scored 7 points!!! Holy crap, 35 points combined in the 4th!!! Unbelievable!!!
The Eagles ran 49 plays for 156 yards. The quarterback, Ramon Richards, had 122 of those yards and most of it came in a very late 4th quarter scoring drive.
Brennan ran 66 plays for 475 yards…429 of those came on the ground!!! The quarterback for Brennan, DeShawn Key, had 18 carries for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nathaniel Wells Jr, the running back, had 22 carries for 106 yards and 1 touchdown. Makai Green, another running back, had 9 carries for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns. Three running backs over 100 yards rushing; wow!!! I don’t think I have ever seen that happen! Jaelan Collier, a defensive back, had 2 huge interceptions in the 4th quarter and both led to touchdowns for Brennan.
Brennan is the real deal and they have the potential to go a long way in the 4A playoffs. Key, Green, and Collier are SOPHOMORES and Wells is a JUNIOR!!! They are a very young team, but they play like veterans!!! You think they are good this year, well they are only going get better in 2013 and 2014 and that is probably when they will join the rest of the Northside high schools in District 27-5A!!! I can’t wait. I love my job!!!
I come home late when I work a football game and last night my sweet wife had dinner prepared for me. All I had to do was nuke it in the microwave. Man, I am so lucky!!! Happy almost 2 years of marriage darling.
FINAL SCORE
Brennan 42 (6-0, 2-0)
Brackenridge 21 (2-4, 0-2)
Later today, I will have my article for the Madison and Roosevelt game that I worked last night.
Tonight, I am at Farris for O’Connor and Marshall. That article will be published tomorrow.
