Week 6 – Jay Mustangs Vs Taft Raiders

On Thursday night, I was at Farris stadium for the 6th time this season for my 6th District 27-5A game between the Jay Mustangs and the Taft Raiders.

I left work at 5:00…281 and Stone Oak Pkwy.  It took me 30 minutes to go 5 miles!!!!  That 5 miles was 1604 and Stone Oak Pkwy!!!  When I finally did get on 1604, it took me another 30 minutes to get to the stadium which is located on 1604 and Bandera!!!  Stupid traffic and construction! Coming home, it took me 20 minutes…1604 and Bandera to 1604 and Judson!!!  Hey, at least it wasn’t raining super hard and I wasn’t driving on low fuel as that was the case my past few drives to Farris!!!!

When I arrived home, I actually watched the end of Game 4 of Yankees series, which was very nice cause I haven’t watched as much baseball as I wanted too.

I worked a Jay game in Week 4 in which they played in a rainstorm and lost.   Adonis Hulbert, the Jay running back, had less than 100 yards rushing and Josh Reynolds, the super talented wide receiver for Jay had 7 receptions for 87 yards and a 13 yard touchdown run on a fake field goal.

This was my first time seeing Taft this season.  Jazz Butler, the starting quarterback for Taft didn’t play on Thursday night.  He was recuperating from a concussion suffered in last weeks game.  Jazz was the bulk of the Taft offense and I was really curious to see how the team would react.

On the first play of the game for Jay, Adonis Hulbert, the running back, ran for a 54 yard touchdown.  Wow!!!  Adonis scored 4 more times on runs and ended the game with 29 carries for 265 yards!!!!  I know the top running backs in San Antonio are Trinton Ynclan from Brandeis, Justin Stockton from Steele, Jarveon Williams from Judson, and Marquis Warford from Madison, but I gotta put Hulbert in there also.

Josh Reynolds, the wide receiver for Jay, had no receptions!!!  He was also the kicker, the punter, and the defensive back (he got an interception).  Why use him when the running game was working?   You know something, I really like Reynolds.  Dude is 6’3 and 185!!!  Remember his name cause he better be playing on Saturdays for a university near you!!!

The Taft Raiders ran a lot of different offensive formations.   Mick Hernandez, the back-up quarterback, started in place of Jazz Butler.  Mick was 13 of 24 passing for 143 yards with 2 interceptions and 1 touchdown.  P J Anderson, a wide receiver, had 7 receptions for 62 yards.  Marque Jackson, the running back, had 17 carries for 51 yards with 1 touchdown.  The player who really impressed me from Taft was Adrian Finley.  Finley is a Junior defensive back who took snaps at the quarterback position and also played running back.  He had 7 carries for 47 yards with 1 touchdown.

As Adonis Hulbert was approaching the the TNL rushing record, I was keeping Dave and Lori updated on his numbers and they had graphics ready to go!!!  Dave is the executive producer of TNL and also the person that hired me.  Lori is the gal who puts my numbers on your television set!!!  During halftime of all the TNL games, Dave and I always chit-chat about the game and stats and if anything pops out to me, they have the capability to create a graphic!!!

I still think the Brandeis Broncos are the cream of the crop in District 27-5A…the O’Connor Panthers and Jay Mustangs look like a lock for the playoffs.  Now that 4th and final spot is coming down to Warren and Holmes.  Wow!!!

FINAL SCORE
JAY   42  (4-3,4-1)
TAFT  21 (2-4,1-3)

Tomorrow, I will have my article on the Hammer Bowl aka Judson Vs Wagner.
