Week 7 – Smithson Valley Rangers Vs Judson Rockets

On Friday night, I was at Rutledge stadium as the Smithson Valley Rangers played the Judson Rockets.  Coming into the game, the Rangers were undefeated and the Rockets had won 4 games in a row.   I was expecting a battle and a really close game and of course a Judson victory by a nail.  The last thing I expected to witness was a blowout.

This was my first time this season seeing the Smithson Valley Rangers.  I know they are extremely well coached, they play smart football, and execute everything flawlessly.  They have a running back named Lawrence Mattison, who last year rushed for just under 2,000 yards with 27 touchdowns.  WOW!!!

This was my 5th Judson game this season and they are getting more and more comfortable with the new offensive scheme.  Last week, at the Hammer Bowl, Johnathon Garcia got the start at the quarterback position and he played marvelously…11 for 19 passing for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns; super impressive.   Jarveon Williams, the running back for Judson, has been the main dude running the ball all season.

I was kinda hoping Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey would get the start last night for the Rockets; I like his agility and legs better but he lacks Garcia’s arm strength…but Coach Smith went with the hot hands of Jonathan Garcia.  Malik Pryor and Tre Flowers, whom are really key defensive players for the Judson Rockets, didn’t play last night!

To a complete surprise to me and probably all the Judson fans, Smithson Valley absolutely dominated the game and crushed the Rockets.  Judson didn’t look like Judson and the Rangers showed everyone they are for real.

The Rockets rushed for a total of 88 yards and 2 touchdowns!!!  That is not a typo!!!  Man, I think that is the first time I have seen the Judson Rocket team rush for less than 100 yards.  Jarveon had a case of fumblelitis and had 10 carries for 38 yards (most came on the first drive of the game for Rockets). Johnathan Garcia only had 19 yards passing.  Ramsey was 12 for 18 passing for 182 yards (the majority coming very late in the game).

Smithson Valley ran 78 plays for 551 yards!!!  Lawrence Mattison, the running back, had a very nice day at the office…23 carries for 137 yards and 1 touchdown.  Garrett Smith, the quarterback, was 14 for 20 passing for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns; he also had 8 carries for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Eleven players touched the ball for the Rangers!

Would the outcome have been the same with Pryor and Flowers?  Should Ramsey have started?  Gosh, I really don’t know.  I am just a blogger with a bunch of words of wisdom!!!

The Rangers are good…really really good and they could very easily make it to Cowboys stadium for a state championship game!

FINAL SCORE
Smithson Valley 45  (7-0, 2-0)
Judson                 14  (4-3, 1-1)

After 7 weeks of high school football, I think the top two teams in San Antonio are the Steele Knights (Judson scored 35 and lost to them in Week 1) and the Smithson Valley Rangers.  Right now, it looks like these two teams could play each other in the playoff!!!  And, if they win the rest of there games, both will also be undefeated!!!  I love high school football!!!  WOW!!!

Tomorrow, I will have my article on the UTSA and San Jose State game that I worked this afternoon.

Next Thursday, I get to see the all mighty Steele Knights as they host the East Central Hornets.  Dude, that is gonna be a good game!  I can’t wait.  I am not looking forward to the Hornets awful road uniforms…white jerseys with very light gold numbers; impossible to see the number!  This is a TNL and a TSRN game so I will be a busy man!!

Not sure where I am at on Friday as Judson travels to San Marcos and I am not available for a road trip.

Saturday, I am the Dome for UTSA football as they host Utah State.
