Number 9 Brennan Bears

No 9 Brennan Bears

I was shocked to see Brennan ranked this high; I mean, they have only been playing varsity football for two years!  They went winless in the first year and improved to 7 wins and 4 losses (1 loss in district play to the Kerrville Tivy Antlers) last season.

This season, they are in a new district and I have a feeling they will steamroll all the opponents and make a playoff run.

I just don’t understand why the starting QB from last season, Dillon Gatian, who just happens to be a coach’s son and is a Senior, is switching positions to become a Wide Receiver?  The new QB is a Sophomore named DeShawn Key.  Boy, Key must be something special.

I don’t remember Key’s name in the one Brennan game I worked last year.  I am sure Mark Kusenberger can provide some information on Key.

Check my blog next week for the team the Express News ranked as No. 8.

Update: 7/4/2012…an email I got from Mark Kusenberger:

during his freshman year, Key took over at quarterback over a veteran with about 19 career starts (Dillon Gatain) and played 14 games on a varsity basketball team that made the Region Tournament.  as you can imagine, I’m impressed.

I didn’t see much of Key personally; he had 1 carry for (-6) in the Tivy game.  but with the impact he’s already made – 417 yards passing on 37 attempts, 26 rushes for 95 yards and 3 touchdowns – it’s clear he’s on his way to great things.

and Dillon Gatain, who never quite looked comfortable at quarterback, can now play wide receiver, where his 4.4 speed will make him very dangerous.

the trick is, in 28-4A, Brennan won’t get pushed very much.  the Bears love to run the ball in their slot-T/wing-T look, and I could easily envision them throwing NO passes in five of the games on their schedule.

let me know if you have any other questions.

See, I told you Kusenberger would have some additional information on Key!  Thanks a bunch Mark.  Really appreciate it.
