Week 1 – Alamo Heights Vs Clark

On Thursday night, I was at Farris stadium for the Alamo Heights Mules and the Clark Cougars.  This was my first visit to Farris this year and at first I thought they were building a basketball stadium, but Ernie told me it is actually another aquatic venue which the school district will use to attract Olympic swimming events.  Wow!!!

I always enjoy working Clark games since I graduated from Clark in 1995; oh no, I am writing my age!!!  Would you believe me if I told you that while I was a student, I only went to one game and that game was the Gucci bowl in my freshmen year in 1991?  Well, it is the truth!  I was actually the student trainer and quit after that game.  I didn’t get hurt; I just didn’t like the attitude of the players.

A few days later, I made (what I considered at that time) a very important decision.  No, it wasn’t where to sit in the cafeteria for lunch! I decided to join the basketball team as the manager and this lasted throughout my 4 years.  The coaches, Danny Murphy and Kevin Hamilton , were absolutely wonderful and they helped me become who I am today.  The players were much more friendlier than the football players.    Had I not made that particular decision, I would not be a statistician or a blogger!!!    I don’t know where the heck I would be.

Our color analyst this year for Thursday Night Lights, Wane McGarity,  was on the Clark basketball team when I was the manager.  So, it was really cool to have a fellow Cougar in the booth last night!

So, not only was this a television game, but it was also broadcasted along the Texas Sports Radio Network.  My radio boss, Bobby did side line reporting, Ed Suarez did play-by-play, and Dave Parker was the color analyst.

Yes, I did double duty!!!!   Hey, my name was mentioned on television, the internet, and radio!!!  It was actually pretty easy for me; just fucking hot when I hung the TSRN banner!!!  After I provided the scoring drive for the television broadcast, I sent Bobby a text message.  He even came to the film deck at halftime to get the first half stats and when the game was over he took my stat boards; I made sure Ernie and Wayne had what they needed from it.   I even hung out in the radio booth after my television obligations were finished and helped em pack everything up.  I am good employee!!!

I have gotta give a HUGE thanks to Ed Suarez.  He is the one who hooked me up to do stats for the Spanish radio broadcasts for UTSA Football home games!  Check my blog tomorrow for my article on my first UTSA football game!

The game itself was a tale of two half’s!

The Clark Cougars ran 37 plays for 174 yards and had the ball for almost 18 minutes in the first half.  Clark led 10 to 7 at halftime.

The Alamo Heights Mules ran  35 plays for 240 yards in the second half.  The Mules also outscored the Cougars 21-0.

Chase Jones, the quarterback for the Clark Cougars, had 22 carries for 110 yards.  Brandon Valle, the running back, had 23 carries for 98 yards.  Those 2 players carried the offensive load.

The Alamo Heights quarterback, Kalen Brackwell, was 13 for 19 passing for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He also had 1 rushing touchdown.  The majority of his passing yards came in the second half and combined Cole Baily and Robert Shuler caught 9 receptions for 186 yards and all 3 passing touchdowns.  The running back, Byron Proctor, had 17 carries for 95 yards.

I was really impressed with the Mules offense and how they adjusted in the second half.  They also have a balanced offense.

Clark has two good running backs, but if they get behind in a game, they are going to struggle since they lack the ability to be an efficient passing team.

FINAL SCORE

Alamo Heights       28  (1-1, 0-0)

Clark                     10   (0-2, 0-0)
